Has retired from footballl. He's only 34. Been years since his peak - shows you how good he was at a young age.

Best striker of his generation, without question. The complete forward. Shame injuries robbed the game of one of the best.

Aye he was on another planet. Apparently fan violence after a recent defeat prompted the decision.

I remember Ferguson being on ITV (beside Ian Wright) as a pundit during the 1998 World Cup and purring about him.

The goals he scored for Barcelona were ridiculous.

indeed - have to wonder what could have been if not for the injuries...

47 goals in 49 games in the single season he was at Barca

same has gone for robert o'carlos, he's looking to move back to europe as his family feels threatened by corinthians fans. shame.

It's a shame, almost a tragedy that his best years were robbed from him by all those injuries. He should never have left Barca, could've been the greatest ever if he stayed at the Nou Camp.

Thanks for the memories all the same.

After his first season at Inter, he only managed 36 League games in the next 4 seasosn, between the ages of 22 and 26. Still managed 24 goals.

Just a great player.

Amazing player. I think he was better for Inter than Barca though. Phenomenal goalscorer in spain who scored solo goals no one else in the game could have scored, but he was a bit of a one-track player. For Inter, he was allround amazing.

He is currently being upstaged by the midget at barca as the biggest phenomenon since Diego though.

they have the worst reputation here, sad how this has developed. a lot of violence recently, mostly involving them.

Some of the goals he scored in the season for Barcelona were insane. Just crashed through defenders who were incapable of stopping him.

i post this clip perennially. not sure i've seen anything like it on a football pitch before or since, the athletic ability and skill in combination i mean. he may have got better in some aspects later in his career. he may have been a more creative force at inter for example, or a more precise finisher at madrid, but i don't think he ever hit these heights again physically.

He's up there with the greats.

For all his fatness and problems, he still had a pretty good goalscoring record in his final years. Hovering around a goal every other game since he left Real.

He's the best player ive ever seen apart from Messi maybe but I preferred to watch Ronaldo. They do come along now and again but it's hard to believe I'll see another striker that's so good and with so many attributes as long as I live.

And he gets fat and shags tranny's, he's a character!

I've never seen a more destructive striker. There's a few goals where he actually loses control of the ball but his sheer power and speed allowed him to just batter defenders out of the way.

Tears in my eyes.

Well not really, but he was a fabulous striker in his prime. One of the most explosive strikers I have seen.

Ronaldo's international goals and awards mean that he'll always be greater than many of the other great players.. Messi or Placcy for example. But Messi still has a long way to go.

My 1st pair of football boots were the R9's i belive (Cant remember if thats the right number) He was always the player i wanted to be if we were playing football when i was a nipper!.. him or Rush

Why did he leave Barca? I can't recall.

Did he fall out with someone?

i might be wrong but i remember there being some pressure from nike at the time. think they'd sunk a load of money into inter and didn't sponsor barcelona back then. plus there was all that talk about nike's marketing plan for ronaldo, to have him play for the/a top club in each of europe's big five leagues.

Did he every f***ing shoot, just brushed off every defender then sidefoot the ball in from 10yds. Incredible balance, pace, strength and ball control. I'd forgotten just how good he was.
