Where does Reina rate?

Now that the spotlight has fallen on Pepe, how does he rate among Liverpool's goalies of living memory? There's quite a list, headed by Cyril Sidlow, Younger, Tommy Lawrence, Ray Clemence, Grobbelaar, James and Pepe himself. Think meself he would be third on that list, behind Clemence and Lawrence but a lot depends on how far back your memory goes!

I'd have to say Ray Clemence for me then Reina and then Grobelaar (if only for his antics that used to put your heart in your mouth).

Clemence.

 

He was a revolutionary goalkeeper.

 

Played as a sweeper, racing out to send attackers flying right up in the air as he crunched into them.

Swore his head off all through the game to keep defenders on their toes. The ball would be down the other end for half an hour and he'd be calling the centre halves all sorts of lazy barstads and seemed to really mean it. Was great as a kid hanging off the bars at the front hearing him belt them out.

Would have had 150 caps if it weren't for Shilton. They were both so good they used to be alternated for england. Imagine that? Everyone agreed to it and it was just accepted that they'd take turns.

Dudek should be on your list way ahead of James. Friedel was better than James too. Neither of them compare to Reina like.

Purely based on stats it's Pepe although Clemence won the lot (almost, not the FAC).

I doubt any coach would get away with it now. They'd be accused of being weak and indecisive, but with Clemence and Shilton no-one could really argue.

I think it is almost impossible to compare. Different eras, and different defenders in front.

 

My personal impression would be a three way tie between Clem, Grobbelaar and Pepe.

 

I think Clem read the game the best and was just about the best for positioning.

Grobbelaar was the most athletic/gymnastic and could therefore 'recover' the best, and Reina has the best reactions I've ever seen, along with the penalties thing obviously.

 

If stats say it's Pepe>Clem>Grob, then I don't think I'd argue too much.

 

Never saw Lawrence et-al, and James, Dudek etc. are a league or so below.

Clemence formed part of our best ever defence in the late 70s and won 3 European Cups with us. Reina the best since. Hard to say who is better as I do not remember Clemence playing that well. I

I remember keepers all the way back to 1971, though I was only 8 years old at the time.

 

For me, Reina is the best of the lot - he tops Clemence, with Grobelaar behind him - just. Mike Hooper doesn't quite make my top 10.

 

If I remember correctly though, Clemence himself left while still a very good keeper to go to Spurs (played against us at Wembley too!). We were happy though because we got Grob - though it took him a while to settle down. If Reina leaves I'll be gutted, but ... in 2011 there are plenty of good goalkeepers around if you spend what we'd get for him.

Seen em all going back to and including the Flying Pig, Pepe is the best for me. Clem 2nd and Grob 3rd.
