A BINMAN told of his horror at discovering a man trapped inside his refuse wagon and said: “He’s lucky to be alive”.

Stephen Jackson, who works for B&M Waste Services in Wirral, heard the victim’s faint cries as he collected bins with a colleague in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They realised the screams were coming from the back of their lorry as they worked outside varnishing manufacturers AEV Ltd on Marion Street in Birkenhead around 5.15am.

He told the ECHO the pair expected the worst as they approached the back of the wagon.

Stephen said: “At first we thought it (the noise) was a lad who was caught short and jumped over the wall in Marion Street but then Keith said it was coming from the wagon.

“Believe me you will never know how the world comes to a grinding halt when this happens, or the things that go through your head.

“Anyway everything comes back into focus and we called emergency services.”

The emergency services were called but the pair managed to free the man after releasing the bin wagon shutters at the back of his vehicle.

Stephen said: “When the back was opened no-one knew what to expect; because of the way he had got into the back of the wagon only the worst could be expected. You never think when you start your day’s work how things are going to end.

“But this lad’s guardian angel was looking over his shoulder.

“Here he was sitting up on the pavement talking to the medics and off he went to hospital, leaving me and Keith to clean up the mess.

“We wonder how the hell did he not get killed. I cannot tell you how but on another day things would be different.”

B&M waste services director Dave Curtis added: "We would like to remind people of the dangers of entering any type of waste container. The machinery used for emptying such bins is very powerful and can cause serious injuries, or worse.

"It is incredible how lucky this person was."

Two fire crews from Birkenhead were called out after being alerted by the ambulance service that a man had been discovered trapped inside a bin wagon compartment.

The man escaped serious injury and was taken to Arrowe Park hospital with nothing worse than suspected broken legs.

A probe is underway to find out how the man, who has not been named but is in his 30s, ended up in the back of the wagon.

It is suspected he may have fallen asleep inside a bin after a night out.
