AnfieldCop Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Although we were not great today it was obvious to see the importance of Agger today. His composure on the ball and calmness is vital for us. IMO we are a different team with him at the back. He should play every match he is fit. To sell our best central defender would be madness. An injury-free Agger and Gary Cahill as our central defenders for year to come !!
yellow jumper Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 that's our best 4, imo. at least if we want to be a more positive looking outfit.
CarraLegend Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Give that 4 a run now, just keep playing Aurelio until he breaks. If he's just put Konchesky out of the firing line and plans to reinstate him as our next 3 are away from Anfield then he deserves to be murdered.
AnfieldCop Posted January 1, 2011 Author Posted January 1, 2011 that's our best 4, imo. at least if we want to be a more positive looking outfit. Agree with that. But I am still not convinced that Martin is good enough for our first VI. Johnson is also s#ite defensively, but we all know that.
Benzo-13 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 The difference with Agger and Aurelio was night and day.Footballers playing football on the deck.Who would've thought of it?

kop205 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 The difference with Agger and Aurelio was night and day.Footballers playing football on the deck.Who would've thought of it? Indeed. Just a shame that you always feel the next serious injury is never far away. Whilst fit, they are key players and help us produce much better football. It is a massive shame that they can't be relied upon - but the fact is that they can't. They are autmoatic picks in our first choice line up when fit (though as for the rest of the defence, ever stronger cases can be made for Soto and Kelly over Skrtel and Johnson), but what we really need are people of ther quality (or even better ideally) who can play 40+ games a season.
fred milne Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 There was a nice little moment about 5 mins in when Agger, Aurelio and (I think) Lucas were being pressed aggressively by Bolton close to the left touchline and they just calmly worked a triangle between themselves. If Carra had been playing the ball would have been orbiting Neptune by now.

fred milne Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Always think Maxi is part of us playing better football as well.Absolutely. He really helps us keep the ball in midfield by doing the basics right. I'm hoping he's got the LM berth for the forseeable now.
superledger Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Selling Agger would be criminal. get him fit and make him one of the first names on the team sheet.

schmuckdonald Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 As much as I love the guy, I just can't see him having a long term future at the club. Felt sorry for him today as every time he tried to push the back line up the pitch all three of them ignored him. That's not how Roy likes it, Daniel.

It's only fitness for him, but that's a big only
Ombudsam Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Agree with that. But I am still not convinced that Martin is good enough for our first VI. Johnson is also s#ite defensively, but we all know that. needs his brain switching on. some of the stuff he does is like WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sangria Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Anyone who complains about his weakness in the air should be made to watch Hansen. The late 80s side were seriously dodgy in the air. But it didn't matter, as they were hardly ever under sustained pressure, because they concentrated on a mode of football which emphasised dominance in possession, and usually only left them with scraps to clear up. None of them were as good as Carragher at his peak in defending under sustained pressure, but they didn't need to be. In the current team, the player to watch out for is Johnson. He is the barometer of how the team is playing. If he's looking good, the team is playing in the style it should. If he's not looking good, the team has a deficiency somewhere.

I think Agger is better in the air than Carra or SkrtEl
gulaman Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 There's a noticeable decrease in hoofing the ball aimlessly when Agger is in the team. Let's hope he stays fit and that Comolli can find a good centre-half to partner him during the transfer window.
FirstDescent Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Noticed Agger beating Kevin Davies in a few aerial challenges today, and that Agger stayed in defence on our attacking corners. Or was it just the one I wondered where he was that he stayed back on?

Our best season came when Gerrard, Torres and Alonso (and Kuyt and Benayoun) were all on fire, but people often forget it also came when Fabio Aurelio played/started the most games he has in a season for LFC.
épieur Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Good post. I think Agger is better in the air than Carra or SkrtEl yup. He's held Drogba in check and that's good enough for me. He's not hyypia, but he's better than his height suggests (not that he's short).

And people forget how good Insua looked when Aurelio was out for short periods, and Insua played instead. In terms of the overall team philosophy and how the team should be playing, Insua is a good player and competition for someone like a fit Aurelio. Instead, people concentrate too much on the individual without seeing the overall picture, never realising there's a wood around them because they're too busy looking at the trees. See also Johnson, Lucas.

kop205 Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 120 games for Agger in all competitions since he signed. Brutal truth is we need soemone of his quality and style, but who can play twice as much as he does. Otherwise, it makes it very difficult to actually build a team because the football we play with him is something that we find very hard to do without him.
