FOOTBALLERS are devastated at the sudden death of former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Dale Roberts.

 

The 24-year-old, who left the club in January last year, died suddenly on Tuesday night a few hours before he was due to play in a cup match.

 

It is thought police are looking at the possibility he took his own life.

 

Reports claimed last night that Mr Roberts had been upset about a personal relationship.

 

Yesterday, footballers who had played alongside Mr Roberts paid tribute to the talented goalkeeper.

 

Former Nottingham Forest player Spencer Weir-Daley went through academy training and then on to the reserves with Mr Roberts.

 

"He was a really good young goalkeeper, but the thing that stood out about Dale was that he was one of the nicest guys in football and I never heard anyone say a bad word about him," said Spencer, who has also played for Notts County. "I heard he had died last night and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It's just a sort of sinking, disappointing feeling because he had so much going for him."

 

"Everyone is just in shock really."

 

Mr Roberts, of Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, was a product of the Reds' youth system and was a regular on the Forest bench in 2007/8 before being loaned to Eastwood Town and then twice to Rushden and Diamonds.

 

He joined Rushden and Diamonds permanently in January last year.

 

Mr Roberts was due to play at Rushden and Diamond's FA Trophy first round match with Eastwood Town on Tuesday. The club called off the game after hearing about his death.

 

Ian Breckin, who played at Nottingham Forest at the same time as Mr Roberts, said he was devastated to hear about the young player's death.

 

"He was a young lad when I was at Forest and obviously we are just gutted to hear the news," he said.

 

"We lost contact when I left but he was a lovely young lad who worked hard and wanted to have a career in professional football. It's devastating.

 

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends."

 

Mr Robert's parents visited Rushden and Diamonds yesterday afternoon after travelling from their home in Cumbria.

 

The club also held an open day for fans to lay flowers on the pitch.

 

Nottingham Forest chief executive Mark Arthur also paid tribute to the goalkeeper.

 

He said: "It is with great sadness that we learnt of Dale's untimely death.

 

"Dale was a talented goalkeeper who had a highly promising career in the game ahead of him. His death is a tragedy and our thoughts are with his family and friends."

 

Lindsey Cowan, the fiancee of Mr Roberts, described him as "my childhood sweetheart and the love of my life".

 

"We had been together since a young age and I will never get over his death," she said.

 

The footballer's parents, Isabelle and George Roberts, said Lindsey and their son had been very happy together.

 

Mr and Mrs Roberts said: "We are grieving for our wonderful son Dale. We are devastated by his death."
