Exercise or rest to make a great striker (6)

Defender messed up, enraged Liga (6, 5)

Kenya’s premier on rebel broadcaster: “He’s not very good” (9)

Endless cull reversed as a veil spins to reveal middleman (5,5)

I still don't understand crossword clues.

the first or the last phrase will always give you a simpe, non-cryptic clue: great striker, defender, he's not very good, middleman. the rest is easier once you know that.

The "he's not very good" clue had me scratching my head for a little while. I was trying my hardest to get "Poulsen" in there somehow.

I believe that one would be "he's f***ing s***".

Wa-hey! I'm starting to get the hang of this now. ;)

I'm not very good at them either, but there's often an anagram somewhere.

I don't get the Konchesky clue. I like the Lucas clue though, multi-layered and clever.

Kenya's permier = K (i.e. first letter).

on = on

rebel = che (guevara)

broadcaster = sky

aye, that one was obvious. :unsure:

hehe

To be fair, these things are normally all about reverse engineering. Find an answer that fits (i.e. someone s*** that plays for us) and then find out why it could be the answer.

i.e. You're not going to go "OK, 'rebel' must be 'che', so lets find someone who fits xxxCHExxx". You figure out it probably begins with 'K', find a s*** players who fits, then work out the rest.

You've not got the hang of this at all have you. Take a look at A@A's quizzes and use the altogether better approach of having cryptic clues that don't have any logic, sense or connections. That's the way you do cryptyic clues.

f***, you lot are much smarter than me, I like crosswords that have clues like

He's a lad, from sunny spain, who gets the ball and scores again. (6)

"a fat ass man" is the non-cryptic bit, so you're looking for an overweight "ass man" (assistant manager).

"free" is an anagram indicator, so it's an anagram of "my meals"; "sweet centre" is the centre of the word "sweet", i.e. the letter e; and "with" implies that need to go into the anagram too.

so a fat assistant manager which is an anagram of "my meals e"
