There's a more than reasonable chance that hhis is a classic case of Daily Mail applying their own (false) context to quotes as they did with John Henry ref Gerrard, at the weekend.
Red Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 I hope so David. Expect a Pepe denial shortly then....
John am Rhein Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 "'Rafael Benitez was an essential person for this club and the reason I came to Liverpool,' he said. "
Stevie H Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 if we don't finish top four and have champions league football next season does anyone think that reina and torres won't be looking to move on?
Murphman Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 if we don't finish top four and have champions league football next season does anyone think that reina and torres won't be looking to move on? Me. If the cheque book is out and a bright new manager installed I think they'll stay.
David Hodgson Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I hope so David. Expect a Pepe denial shortly then.... We're not told the questions he was asked for starters. I think he's saying he'll see how this season goes, which is entirely reasonable. I wouldn't expect a player of his calibre to want to endure another season outside of the CL. The good news is that those January exit stories were nonsense. The comments about Rafa are fairly meaningless without the context of the question. He is probably just straight batting and being respectful. I suspect a journalist was trying to lure him into saying something negative. I wouldn't expect him to be any way critical of Rafa, nor would I expect him to 'hint' that it was a problem for him that Rafa's now gone, as the Mail wants to imply. Me. If the cheque book is out and a bright new manager installed I think they'll stay. I think it (the cheque book) would have to be out in such a big f*ck off way that both players would seriously think we might be about to win the league in 2011/2012. Anything short of that and they'd go with Stevie H's view that another season without CL football is unacceptable.
Stevie H Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Me. If the cheque book is out and a bright new manager installed I think they'll stay.couple of pretty large ifs there murph. both these players have finite careers and want to be playing at the top level however much they might have formed an attachment to a club. if we don't have CL football to offer players next summer it's pretty likely these two will be approached by clubs which do.
muleskinner Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Reins signing a 6 year deal with no cl plus us being mired in the s*** off the pitch with no guarantee it was going to improve is a bit odd if you then want to quit for those reasons 6 months later. I'm taking a large pinch of salt on this.
digs_nz Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I think we are safe with Pepe. Goalkeepers have longer careers, so he will be less concerned with losing two seasons (this and last) fir the club he loves, especially since the future atmm seems bright. I'm remaining optimistic bout Nando too, but wouldnt begrudge a move, since he is reaching his peak years. Love the both, but if they want out can understand why, just hope a World cup medal keeps them happy enough to stay

Dan Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 http://www.telegraph...Pepe-Reina.html 20m clause for Pepe. Independent: Liverpool's American owners have already started the process of ensuring the club hold on to Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina this summer, opening preliminary discussions which it is hoped will remove release clauses written into the two players' contracts. It is understood that Torres reached an informal understanding with Liverpool before the New England Sports Ventures (NESV) group, headed by John W Henry, took over that he would be permitted to leave at the end of this season if Liverpool had failed to qualify for the Champions League and a good offer came in. The same goes for Reina, with unconfirmed suggestions that a £20m release clause is in place. Henry and his new chairman, Tom Werner, have already held initial talks with specific players. Though they believe there is no emergency – neither Torres not Reina are agitating to leave – they will be seeking to ensure that the undertakings, given at a time when the former managing director Christian Purslow needed his key playing assets secure to continue his search for buyers, do not leave Liverpool at risk of losing their best players. It is understood that NESV does not consider there to be any risk of either Torres or Reina leaving the club in January, as reflected in Henry's assertion in the weekend press that players should expect to be held to contracts – the looseness of which made the Premier League akin to the "Wild West" in comparison to American sports, he said. NESV believes it is incumbent upon the company to make key players feel that they want to stay at Anfield. The Wigan manager, Roberto Martinez, declared yesterday that his side will be facing Roy Hodgson's team at "the worst possible time" tomorrow night, and ascribes Torres' struggle for form to the effects of the World Cup, a tournament in which Liverpool's head of sports science, Dr Peter Brukner, declared last week that Martinez's compatriot had not been fit enough to play. "The number of niggles and injuries he has had [have been a problem] and as a player you always have the World Cup in your mind and that could have been a problem," Martinez said. "All the big players when they get to the World Cup, try and put extra energy into it and that affects the start of the next season and that is normal. "When [Torres] came out in the summer and made clear what he wanted to do [stay at Liverpool], it has never been in doubt. He's a really focused boy and if you look how he was the youngest captain in Atletico Madrid's history it shows his maturity. He is an old head on young shoulders," Martinez added.
Redray Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 GuillemBalague GuiNo truth in Torres and Reina exit clauses, and no intention of quitting Anfield in Jan.
yellow jumper Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 he's right about rafa. but then he's always come across as one of the more enlightened members of the squad.
Earl Hafler Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1327896/Arsenal-Pepe-Reina-red-alert-Liverpool-keeper-hints-quit-Anfield-summer.html PLTNBT!! Only a couple of weeks ago we were in the bottom three with the crowd demanding a new manager. It's understandable that he is still cautious but if the club is heading in the right direction come May, i think he'll still be here. He's our most important player and i think he's been saying all the right things to the media.

I'm not 100% on Fernando but I think he'd be happy if a.Rafa came back or b. A few quid was spent and we completely revamped the squad and looked ready to challenge next season. Pepe is definitely the same but he REALLY gets the club and the city, the other question being if he left, where would he go? It's not Spain with Valdez and Casillas entrenched, Arsenal are not much better than us and I can't see him becoming a manc (God forbid!). It's likely he'll stay if we give him reasonable hope.

Red Kent Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 One of our most important players and the best keeper in the world. Yet still no song at the match for him.
johngibo YPC Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 One of our most important players and the best keeper in the world. Yet still no song at the match for him. There is a chant. It got a loud airing on SundayHe seems ok with it
Mike Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 One of our most important players and the best keeper in the world. Yet still no song at the match for him. er...
Red Kent Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Apologese then. I have never heard it at Anfield or on tv. Must be a quick one and whispered ;-)
Tones Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Ive thought for a while now that we are indanger of losing these 2 next summer. They deserve better than what we currently are playing and achieving. Hopefully we can turn things round to persuade them to stay.
Crazy Horse Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Do Torres and Pepe have the same agent? I wonder where the contract clauses story originated?
richwilks Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 "'Rafael Benitez was an essential person for this club and the reason I came to Liverpool,' he said. " That's the key quote. Disillusioned with Hodgson maybe?
