As we hear of Kenny Dalglish's increased involvement in the managing of our football club it's worth remembering what he stands for and has achieved as a representative of The Liverpool Way.

 

He's the fella who won the double as player-manager.

 

I would like to hear rumours of what he's up to. I want to know what he does on the training ground and the games he goes to.

 

See all along I thought that Rafa was the hero of the Shakesperian box set that our club had become but maybe not. He might still be yet but perhaps there is another sun in the sky and he is about to get his big scenes.

The interview was slanted by the papers (?) as another dig at Rafa who apparently didn't want Kenny around, despite it being him who asked him to come back and is quoted in an interview last season as saying he used Kenny as a mentor, with there not being anyone better to learn from.

This summer was a strange one because we all know that Kenny threw his hat into the ring, only for Purslow (a reported friend) to choose our current manager* instead - very strange indeed!

 

Not sure how many of us here remember his sides from the late 80's but they were the best in Europe - it was only the ban that stopped us proving ourselves against Sacchi's Milan side.

 

I'm not talking about some nostalga-sodden, Newcastle-style messiah appointment here, Kenny has proven that he's a top-class manager with more than one club.

 

I wasn't so sure in the summer, mainly because I didn't want to see him to tarnish his legacy under G&H - but having seen him interviewed since then I think he'd could be fantastic for us once again.

There has to be a question mark against Dalglish because, although he did create some brilliant teams - Blackburn too as well as Liverpool - his more recent efforts weren't of such a high standard. That said, he's hardly likely to be worse than Hodgson so let's give him the job.

If the owners had any idea of the impact of handing Kenny the job they'd be itching to get it done.

 

The change in atmosphere would be like signing ten players, never mind the 'twelth man' we'd be swarming all over

That team was a magnicent side but personally I think the Milan side were at another level again. I've never seen better. But jebus, any games between the two would have been magnificent. I'd love to have seen Barnes at his best taking on Malidini, Rush against Baresi and our midfield ging toe to toe with theirs.

That's complete BS. He took a team that was failing under Keegan to second in the league and the club to two FA Cup Finals. He managed the team that beat Barcelona in the Champions League which was memorable because it was the first time an English team had got a result against such quality opposition in the competition.

 

His transfer policy was questioned because he got rid of David Ginola and Les Ferdinand and the perceived replacements, John Barnes and Ian Rush were "failures". The reality was that Barnes and Rush were a couple of experienced old heads that could have helped get them from second to first in the league but it didn't work out. Jon Dahl Tomasson was signed as a link up player to play off of Shearer but ended up being used as an out and out striker when Shearer got injured at the start of the season. Without Shearer's goals they became a mid table side much like Liverpool did without Torres last season.

 

Something else that is conveniently forgotten is that under Keegan there was no reserve or competitive under age football at Newcastle - Dalglish had to undo that damage.

Reasonable excuses perhaps, but whichever way you look at it Dalglish's record has been tarnished since Blackburn

 

And the long spell out of management puts another question mark against him too

 

I still think he should replace Hodgson with immediate effect, though, and depending on how that goes may be a long term option
