What happened to his Mrs being homesick....

Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano has revealed that his reason for leaving Liverpool this summer was due to the lack of investment from George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

The Reds' financial problems saw the Argentina captain, 26, offloaded to the Catalan giants towards the end of August for £17.25million, which ensured that the club's net spend for the previous transfer window was in profit by £2.2million.

Now that Gillett and Hicks have finally been ousted, Mascherano has revealed that he found it difficult leaving Anfield but felt the timing was right as Liverpool were faltering behind their other top four rivals when it came to strengthening the club due to its high-level debts.

He said: "While Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United were spending big money, Liverpool couldn't because they had no money.

"The situation is clear to me. When you want to fight for big things, titles, you must have a big team to win. But, at Liverpool, that wasn't the case.

"That was the main reason we didn't qualify for the Champions League and all players want to test themselves at that level.

"It is not easy to leave a team when you have been there almost four years. The Liverpool people and fans treated me very well. I cannot say anything against them and they will always be in my heart.

"But, though it was difficult, I knew my time there was over. Finished. I needed to go."

Liverpool are now debt-free following the successful takeover of New England Sports Ventures (NESV) and tough-tackling Mascherano admits that he always has one eye on his former employers' results and hopes that things on the pitch start to improve for them.

He added: "I try to watch all of Liverpool's games on TV. They have had a tough start but I'm sure they'll get much better.

"There have been a lot of problems with the owners and this has affected things on the pitch.

"Now this has been sorted out, I think things will get better for the team."

He was lined up for a new deal in Feb/Mar then it went quiet.

He'd been ace with Meireles and Aquilani!!

How odd then that back in May he said this.

“I have no problem living in Liverpool, but I think my wife and daughters deserve to enjoy every day to the full and live their lives – but they have to be at home all day.
“My wife doesn’t speak a word of English, so she depends 100% on me. I live here with them. That’s my world, that’s my life.”

I've no great problem with Mascherano, he is what he is but I liked him while he was here and have no great need to rage against him.

He is a cheeky f***** if he said what you reckon though.

I'm not saying owt about his performances, but I'm not sure him and Rafa had their futures tied. If he believes what he says and it was about honours, up to him, but he was lining up a move after we came 2nd. Different day, different story with that lad.

I was saying it in the summer - he doesn't release the ball quickly enough.

Players like Makalele and Whelan were much quicker in possession once they made a tackle.

He'll probably be back in the Premier League next summer (Arsenal or the Mancs) and will want an easy time.

He's not far behind Owen and McManaman on my list of deserting ****s.
