Fifa officials offer to sell 2018 World Cup bid votes.

 

Two Fifa officials have offered to sell their votes in the contest to host the 2018 World Cup, according to a Sunday Times report.

 

The newspaper has video footage in which Nigerian Amos Adamu, a Fifa executive committee member, appears to ask for £500,000.

 

This is completely against Fifa rules.

 

And Oceania Football Confederation president Reynald Temarii, wanted money for a sports academy for his vote, which will take place on 2 December.

 

England are competing to host the tournament in eight years time, as well as Russia and joint bids from Spain and Portugal and Holland and Belgium.

 

A 24-strong committee will decide by secret ballot who should host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

 

The footage, filmed by undercover Sunday Times journalists, shows Adamu wanting money to be paid to him directly for endorsing a bid.

 

The reporters had posed as lobbyists for a United States bid. The US decided on Friday to withdraw from the running for the 2018 World Cup and instead concentrate on the 2022 competition.

 

In the video, Adamu was asked whether the money for a "private project" would have an effect on the way he voted, he replied: "Obviously, it will have an effect. of course it will. Because certainly if you are to invest in that, that means you also want the vote."

 

Fifa has so far not responded to the allegations.

USA were pulling out of 2018, which meant that it was guaranteed a European nation was going to get the 2018 vote. So England pulled out since it was guaranteed that a non-European would get 2022.

 

I'm guessing England are the favourites though to be honest.

Completely. They will happily enact all terms and conditions that Fifa demand regarding application of sponsorship deals etc etc. Fifa made a couple of billion from the South African WC, they would possibly double that in an American WC.

The concept of a free and fair vote among Fifa delegates is a joke. Regardless of who gets what along the way, the vote will return the result that Fifa wanted.

Portugal and Spain would be much better than Russia I think. But I think Russia will get it.

 

Qatar only bid for 2022.

Be interesting seeing how/if theyd dish out Sharia law to deal with the fans.

Although to be fair I wouldn't mind it as a venue as its the only country going for 2022 that wouldn't leave European residents with a stupid time zone issue.

its mental. you look at the s**** world cups recently. Japan/korea, South Africa and America. countries without real international pedigree or top leagues. they need to get it back to Europe and South America on a more regular basis, and throw in the odd one elsewhere. this is the first world cup in South America since 1978. well '86 if you count Mexico, but either way its too long a gap. 2018 should be in England.

I don't get how that suggestion isn't being pilloried by not just our press, but the press of every FIFA country. It's as big an admission of corruptness I've ever seen go unchallenged.

I think it shows that when it comes to greasing, we have no power. We will however continue to have a huge tv market and a huge global audience for our domestic game. Even on the law of averages this is a slap in the face and pretty much a f*** off with your ways.

 

 

If England dont get it, they can be reasonably sure that the World Cup wont be coming here in the next generation, so why kowtow to anymore UEFA and FIFA whims, why not decide on an agenda that suits the future of English football, domestic and International and start using financial power to push ahead. I'm thinking of pushing the International calender into ways that make more sense to players who come from around the globe, ie playing the international matches in blocks mid season and end of season, not having these breaks.
