Depends if he's a **** or not.

 

Sure, he'll always get some from the loons but most of them would quite happily shout racist abuse if they could get away with it.

 

If, only for example and in no way libellous because he's never had a professional Beard as a wife, Ashley Cole came out then he'd get mountains of abuse. Yes, it would be homophobic but it would be 'cos he's a ****. If Beckham or Shearer had it would be more limited.

 

What'll probably happen is some 2nd Division player will come out first and get dog's abuse before fading into obscurity - putting off the next one. No superstar Premier League player will be the first. What it needs is a recently retired star to stand tall and be a gay rights spokesman much like John Amaechi is now. If one can trailblaze and deal with it in a way that can only bring respect (and not have been a **** when playing) then it will make it easier.

 

Putting aside my rational point above: If a player does come out then I think he needs to be British. I'm as banter-happy/borderline homophobic as the next bloke so if he was from Europe I'd be thinking "bloody Portugeuse... should've known... they're all at it" but if he was British my little 'gotta be PC about it' warning light would come on. And probably the same with many match-going fans.
