what do you mean this generation's zidane? as in he'll be the best player in the world?

doubt he'll even come close to Messi to be honest, neither does zidane though

ok, you're wrong

Messi will be the best player in the world for the next 10 years, to be challenged only by Suso

That last bit is quite funny

Messi could end up better than ZZ but he certainly isn't yet.

He hasn't done an awful lot for his national team yet for a start.

He's clearly the only player since ZZ that looks like he could surpass him, granted.

at the same age Messi has done a lot more for Argentina than zidane did for france

Yeah ZZ was a late starter in terms of he seemed to suddenly become amazing at about 26 when he went to Juve. Remember reading on teletext back then we were linked with buying him from Bordeaux I think it was, under Evans. What could have been!

Bit worried that Messi having played so much high level footy so young might suffer a level of burnout.

Zidane was the better player. If Messi improves in the next couple of seasons then you can have another crack at it

Difficult to compare ZZ and Messi, isn't it? ZZ was a languid genius who almost drove the French to the World Cup twice, the second time virtually single handedly. On the pitch he could do pretty much nothing for 89 minutes, and then bring out a moment of magic. Messi hasn't done much for the National side, although with questionable managers it must be said, but on the pitch he is all action with stunning skill, and surrounded by team mates who are also able to contribute something...

Both brilliant!

Messi isn't the same player away from the Nou Camp.

Has flashes at the moment but it should come in time.

Zidane was a genius. The next in line after Maradona and Pele.

That performance v Brazil in '06 nailed it for me.

Heart of a lion too.

I remember that - I think I even remember that the fee quoted was £9mln, though I am not sure if that was before or after Euro 96. Anyway, I remember the emergence of Zizou around that tournament and even then I am sure he must have been pinpointed before that if I only became aware then.

Messi is a great player and I love watching him. However, Zidane was beautiful to watch. Its difficult to describe. He controlled the uncontrollable ball, he played the game in slow motion at times with casual flicks of his boot to play in players. He had eyes in the back of his head to play back heelers to team mates. His movement and linking up of play is still a class above what anyone else in his generation could produce and then there was the sight of this 6ft 1 guy throwing step overs and drag backs with ease. Perhaps linked to his ability to control the uncontrollable was his ability to claw back possession just when you thought he lost it.

In short, he did things you didn't expect because your expectations were based on what other footballers could do.

Just class.

I love Messi but he's not at ZZ's level for me yet.

Zidane was just jawdropping to watch.

And that's a good point above - Messi needs to do a bit more away from home.

The thing about Zidane I like (and it's something I love about Kenny) is that whilst all of the things in here are true, just seeming to have an age on the ball and always in space and knowing what was going on around him etc etc

He was also f***ing hard as nails. One of my favourite Kenny moments is him t***ting Gordon McQueen in the league cup final in a 50/50. McQueen ended up hobbling around up front for the remainder of the game. Zidane had that too.
