Biggest Club in England

Fernando Torres is desperate for Liverpool to find new owners in order to bring the glory days back to Anfield.

Reds co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks put the club up for sale in April and Barclays Capital was appointed to oversee the process.

But a buyer has yet to be found, with Hong Kong businessman Kenny Huang abandoning his interest and uncertainty surrounding a consortium fronted by Yahya Kirdi.

Star striker Torres, who ignored interest from Chelsea and Manchester City in the summer to voice his commitment to Roy Hodgson's new-look Liverpool, hopes a solution can be found quickly.

"It is fundamental new owners arrive that can make us a competitive side," he told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

Delicate situation

"We're not that far behind. We had an appalling season last time around, but the year before we were just four points from Manchester United.

"Hopefully we can find a consortium that buys the club and can make Liverpool able to fight financially with Chelsea and United.

"Then let's see what we're capable of doing this season. Liverpool kept Steven Gerrard which is fundamental. It's still a great team.

"It's a delicate situation because we are not in the Champions League, but it is still the biggest club in England and to play at Anfield every week is a privilege.

"That's how I see it. I like to have targets, and to be able to help bring Liverpool back where they deserve is a beautiful target.

Complicated

"It is always complicated when you start with a new manager and new players, but we'll see what we are capable of."

Torres has also revealed that Liverpool rejected bids for his services in the summer transfer market.

"The club received offers and decided to reject them," he said. "That's where it ends. Everyone thought I was leaving for Spain during the World Cup when there was nothing in it.

"I said the day I returned to train that my future was at Liverpool. I have a contract until 2013.

"This year our target has to be the top four. Like every team-mate, we all want to improve and win titles and for that it is fundamental we get new owners."

Brilliant comments from Torres - keeping the pressure on the owners yet at the same time reaffirming his commitment to the club. Really, really impressed with the way he's conducted himself since his return.

I said in the summer that I felt strongly he owed us one more year regardless of our current situation, but I still really appreciate him giving it to us.

If we are still owned by the c*nts next summer I won't begrudge him his move to Barca at all, but lets just hope sanity kicks in somewhere and they give up trying to hold onto a club they are succeeding only in driving into the ground. I think if we could get new owners, back onto a solid footing and challenge regularly he'd stay with us the rest of his career - big if at the moment I know but he obviously loves the club.

Both Alonso and Masch (whatever people may currently think of him) have spoken about giving it 'one more year' and then leaving. Torres is an absolute credit to Liverpool Football Club but do you think that this may be his 'one more year'? I'm honestly not sure what could change to make him stay longer apart from new owners.

graham hunter was on the radio the other day basically saying that the new barca president has already tapped up torres. Told him that there was not enough money to buy him this summer after villas purchase but he will be the marquee buy next summer.

Makes sense in a way - telling him to sit tight and probably suits torres as he wouldnt like to join another english club.

Couple of times now Torres has spoken out about the need for investment. Disappointing that some of our other players havent, and a lot of our ex players also havent.

Thats the way I see it and honestly I wont blame Torres one bit when he goes.

Yep if we don't get 4th, then I definitely will not begrudge him going. If we get 4th, then it will probably depend on the owner situation. If we get above 4th, he might be gracious enough to give us 'one more year' no matter the owner situation.

He will go to barca, win everything, and good on him.

I'm not sure why Barca would need Torres tbf. They sold Zlatan because he didn't fit in with their playing style and eventhough David Villa can play on the left he is better in the center. They also play in the same slow short-style passing game as Spain, which to me doesn't suit Torres at all. He is good enough to make it work and he will always score goals but he needs to play in a team with a more direct playing style. Like us...

Villa is more versatile than Torres.

He played on the left of the attacking three on Sat, with Messi in the middle and Iniesta on the right.

They were fluid and switched positions regularly

And he can play as a sole striker. He did it at Valencia with Silva playing off of him

He can actually, which is surprising as he's not the biggest. Villa is that good he can play any role you want from a striker - in a two, up on his own or drifting wide.

Fernando Torres says it is imperative that Liverpool find new owners quickly if they are to avoid falling further behind the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Torres, who last month pledged his future to the club amid speculation linking him with a move away, also confirmed more than one team had a bid turned down for him this summer.

Reiterating his commitment to Liverpool, where he is contracted until 2013, the 26-year-old said he is desperate to help bring success back to Anfield. For that to happen, Torres believes the club's owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, must complete their proposed sale of the club as soon as possible.

"It's fundamental new owners arrive who can make us a competitive side," he told the Spanish radio station Cadena Cope. "We're not that far behind. We had an appalling season last time around, but the year before we were just four points from Manchester United.

"Hopefully, we can find a consortium that buys the club and can make Liverpool able to fight financially with Chelsea and United. Then let's see what we're capable of doing this season."

Like Torres the club's captain, Steven Gerrard, was linked with a move away from Anfield in the transfer window and his retention was thought to be a crucial factor behind his team-mate's decision to stay.

"Liverpool kept Steven Gerrard, which was fundamental. It's still a great team. It's a delicate situation because we're not in the Champions League but it's still the biggest club in England and to play at Anfield every week is a privilege," Torres said.

"That's how I see it. I like to have targets and to be able to help bring Liverpool back where they deserve to be is a beautiful target. It's always complicated when you start with a new manager and new players, but we'll see what we're capable of."

Chelsea and Manchester City were both linked with moves for Torres this summer.

"The club received offers and decided to reject them," said Torres without identifying the clubs in question. "That's where it ends. Everyone thought I was leaving for Spain during the World Cup when there was nothing in it. I said the day I returned to train that my future was at Liverpool. I have a contract until 2013.

"This year, our target has to be the top four. Like every team-mate, we all want to improve and win titles and, for that, it's fundamental we get new owners."

Graham hunter says a lot and most of it is wrong.

My theory is that he and Ballague just rehash what is being said and speculated about in the Spanish media. Only they can translate. Sprinkle in a bit of analysis and presto, you're an expert.
