I was having a discussion with someone that considers me a hypocrite for paying to download stuff that's available via torrent but having no compunction in downloading movies for free. My argument is that a lot of the stuff that I download is from artists that aren't making a ton of money while the movies I download have usually been televised and could as easily just be saved to a hard drive on a Sky box or whatever.

I know that there isn't likely to be a huge difference in the legality of downloading copyrighted material but I am prepared to distinguish thenm because I feel that there are ethical implications in taking money from artists that aren't making money while I have no issue with not giving money to the larger studios.

Is there any real ethical distinction and should I be differentiating?
