Salary requirements when applying for a job

An agency has shown interest in my CV & has asked for my most recent salary plus expectations.

 

I hate this, as they obviously have a benchmark. Obviously I'll tell the truth about the historical salary, but there's a danger of talking myself down by being flexible and overly accommodating (due to current unemployment stats) and talking myself out of the job as they'll think I may not have the nec. experience; on the flip side, I want to maximize my potential earnings w/o scaring them off.

 

How would you attack this?
