carrafan Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) Heart of a warrior that guy has. Read too many formations of our 'best team' over the last few years with Dirk not in it. We'd be mental not to have him in the side. He's world class without being the most talented guy out there. Edited August 15, 2010 by carrafan
Iver Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Heart of a warrior that guy has. Read too many formations of our 'best team' over the last few years with Dirk not in it. We'd be mental not to have him in the side. He's world class without being the most talented guy out there. Today was exactly the type of game he thrives in. Against the "park the bus" sides, we might be better off with Maxi right mid, but I agree with you that Dirk is a legend, and hugely under-rated.
Conor Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Here here.. If he doesn't win a league here it's up there with Stevie and Carra not winning one. He is that important and dedicated.
Epic Swindle Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 He's brilliant in games like that, runs his heart out. I'd still like to see him benched a bit more against teams who sit back but he's brilliant asset to the squad and club.
Stevie H Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 just carried on his world cup form. a player who takes responsibility and was cracking tonight.

I'd still like to see him benched a bit more against teams who sit back but he's brilliant asset to the squad and club. You're doing him a massive disservice if thats the only reason you want him in the side against better teams. He is very intelligent on the pitch and plays the percentages very well. Should have seen the positions he took today, his defensive nous, the passes he makes, headers he wins and defends from the front. Top, top player... quintessential modern footballer.
Conor Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 He's up there with the best in the world.. Big shout but I wouldn't swap him for many.
Tones Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 He was great today. Our other scapegoat Lucas also looked very good when he came on.
Hassony Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 He was great today. Our other scapegoat Lucas also looked very good when he came on. the other scapegoats (Ngog and Skrtle) also played very well

Falconhoof Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) the other scapegoats (Ngog and Skrtle) also played very well In general I think we are being generous on here today. In the first half we weren't very good. Ngog didn't look very good first half but obviously made amends with a stunning finish in the 2nd half. we can look to pat people on the back and all that but we'll be better when we get into our stride a few games in. I don't think the selection was quite right today but at this stage of the season you don't know until you get them out there. On paper, before kick off I though we were well equipped for a win. The midfield balance in the first half worried me though. all a bit isolated from each other, while the likes of wilshere and diaby pushed forward and passed it around much better than ours. Kuyt was terrible in the first half. Needlessly concede possession 4 times. Much better after the break, but not really worth going on about.
Chili Palmer Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Kuyt was terrible in the first half. Needlessly concede possession 4 times. Much better after the break, but not really worth going on about. nah, his touch was much better than at any time last season.

Going down to 10 men solidified the midfield.

Agree with most of that. Our first half performance was like an away performance or a lower in the league team vs top club performance. Edited August 15, 2010 by Sion

Kite Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 nah, his touch was much better than at any time last season. That struck me too. Rafa's constantly playing him, game after game, irrespective of fitness or form, can't have helped. Hopefully Roy will use him with a bit more intelligence this season.

When he's out of form, he's absolute s****. Perspective - he's a squad player. On form - pick him. Out of form ( usually October / Novermber til February ) don't pick him every match.

Bootle Buck Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Dirk is one of those players who always seems to be involved. He made some great moves today that quite frankly surprised me but he works so hard and does things purely from his endeavor at times. I can see why his managers must love him and can understand why he is one of the first names on the teamsheet..
New York Red Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 nah, his touch was much better than at any time last season. I couldn't believe how good it was today.
lfc4eva99 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I couldn't believe how good it was today. me neither. He has been a top top signing, in the range of Masch, Reina, and may I add Torres to that list as well. Just because he isn't beautiful to watch all the time doesn't necessarily mean he's dosh. He's always there when you need him, works his heart out and takes up good positions & occupies defenders opening up spaces for the others. I'd have him train some of our kids as he grows older, as close to the model footballer as you can have on.
Earl Hafler Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) Your hatred for him is really strange. So be critical of a player is hatred ? He can be s***, you know, and you don't burst into flames if you say it. Just that after a good performance, people go over the top and the platitudes come out in force. Kuyt - can be great, can be shyte. Edited August 16, 2010 by Earl Hafler
John am Rhein Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Kuyt - can be great, can be shyte. same as everyone else then
