Figaro Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) Sevilla V Barcelona's second team Sanchez Pijuan 21.30 CET Sevilla XI from: PALOP, KONKO - SQUILLACI - (FAZIO) - ESCUDÉ - DABO, NAVAS - ZOKORA - RENATO (CIGARINI) - (ROMARIC) - (ALFARO) - PEROTTI (CAPEL), NEGREDO - KANOUTE - LUIS FABIANO In what may possibly be Luis Fabiano's last game for Sevilla, (playing in the CL qualifier against Braga next week will cup-tie him for any potential buyer - Madrid and Marseilles are the prime candidates) the Brasilian will be looking to impress. The pre-season has placed the player every Sevilla fan loves to hate, Alvaro Negredo, as the top scorer with six goals. Negredo has a lot to prove after a very disappointing first season in which his proven goal scoring ability was overshadowed by his infuriating habit of getting himself sent off and his frank admission that he wasn't really trying because he didn't get on with the then coach Manolo Jimenez. With a price tag of 14 million euros and that fact that he is Sevilla's most expensive signing Negredo knows that he has to shine this season and tonight will probably be a perfect opportunity to start on a high note. Negredo's partner up front during most of the pre-season Frederic Kanoute has shown signs of past form, for example, the sublime penalty against Espanyol in the Trofeo Ramon de Caranza - but has spent more time playing deep and being caught in possession much to the annoyance of his team mates and technical staff. Starting this season as he finished the last, Jesus Navas is the most on-form player in the squad despite the fact that he has just returned from extended holidays after his World Cup success. Sevilla's coach, Antonio Alvarez, has stated that Navas has come back "in even better form than before he left". Another player who has found his stride in the pre-season is Diego Perotti who will probably keep Diego Capel out of the starting XI, Perotti was closely followed by Real Madrid, but interest from the capital waned once the Argentinian declared that he wanted to stay at Sevilla. If Capel does start or get some minutes off the bench then it will be no surprise if he finds the back of the net, the blond winger from Almeria has scored in three of Sevilla's last four matches against Barcelona. Of the new signings this year, Dabo is the most likely to play a part in tonight's proceedings. The Italian midfielder Cigarini will probably have to wait until La Liga begins, altough Alvarez has said that if he is fit enough he will get some minutes either in the first or second leg of the Supercup. Tiberio Guarente is injured and will be out for a month. Barcelona XI from: RUBÉN MIÑO (VALDES) - MAXWELL - MILITO - BARTRA(ALVES) - ADRIANO, DOS SANTOS - THIAGO - KEITA - JEFFREN, - IBRAHIMOVIC - BOJAN (MESSI)- ABIDAL - NOLITO - SERGI ROBERTO - SERGI GOMEZ -MUNIESA ORIOL ROMEU Guardiola has stated that he has "complete faith" in the second string players that he has called up to replace the missing Spanish WC internationals. The 'fantastic seven' have had less time to train and get back into shape after a hectic month of celebrations and an ill-timed friendly against Mexico in the Azteca last week which saw Guardiola rant and rave against the Spanish coach Vincente Del Bosque for picking all the Barca players. Hardly Del Bosque's fault when the contract that the Spanish FA signed for the friendly specifically guaranteed the presence, injuries permitting, of the world cup winning players. Iniesta is still not fit enough to be considered and it will be interesting to see how Barca cope without the midfield machine room of Xavi and Iniesta. Guardiola has also lost the Mexican central defender Marquez to US 'soccer' and will have to form an largely untried back line hoping that the experience of Milito will see the youngsters through. Guardiola has also declared that he will not be using any of the WC players, but Spanish football pundits have said that if things look bleak Messi may well have to come off the bench to try to save the situation. Barca's coach has also told the press to lay off Ibrahimovic and to end speculation about the Swede. Sevilla's defence has been prone to the odd error this preseason but the wingers have shown the way and if Navas and Perotti play to form then goals will arrive. Barca's second squad will have things to prove and they have enough quality in certain players to make life difficult for the home side. Sevilla need a winning margin of two or more goals to be able to go to the Camp Nou and have a chance of getting a result in the return leg against what undoubtedly will be a full-strength Barca. Earl Hafler Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 Fantastic to see Zlatan classed as second string.

Pep's words not mine - Guardiola has been criticised for being overtly protective of Zlatan but some sources state that lately things have cooled between them and that Guardiola has accepted the boardroom view that the Swede can be sold.

Heh heh, the annoying thing about Sid is how much he describes players euphemistically and without naming them, presuming that you know exactly what he's talking about when you don't... I enjoy his articles but sometimes I am really scratching my head going "who???" when he's banging on about things like 'Round 26 of La Liga was the story of two strikers. One who scored 2, missed a penalty and finished the night photographed leaving Gijon's most famous brothel with 3 ladies of the night and the other who having done his secondary school exams just 2 weeks ago, scored a hat trick for his home town club on only his 4th appearance" And then spends 4 paragraphs telling you who these guys were. If at all.

If at all. Ha! He's rolled that back in the last 6 months though to be fair, reckon someone must have had a word. Because it was getting seriously cryptic for a while there last season. There was one article I remember he did and I seriously didn't have a clue as to one player he was talking about.
