Steven Gerrard admits England deserve to be booed by fans during tomorrow's friendly against Hungary and said he would join in if he was in the stands at Wembley.

England are expected to be given a tough time by fans following their disappointing World Cup campaign in South Africa this summer. Gerrard, who will captain the side, said: "I'm expecting a mixed reaction. I'm sure there will be boos but we have to take it on the chin. We deserve it, we let them down. Hopefully, with time, we can show them we are a good team and that we're desperate to make them happy."

Asked if he would boo the national team, he added: "I probably would."

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are set for a bright new era under Roy Hodgson after the "horror" of last season – and claims that the new signing Joe Cole is better than Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Gerrard, in an interview with Match of the Day magazine, said the new manager has already given Liverpool a lift after a disappointing seventh-place finish last season.

"It's a great club and after speaking with Roy Hodgson I'm really pleased to see his plans for the club. It's a new era now – we must forget about the horror of what happened last season and get this club back to where it belongs, which is the Champions League at the very least."

Gerrard said Cole, signed in July on a Bosman from Chelsea, has the ability to drive the team forward.

"[Lionel] Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better. He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football. I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season."

they should have an official 1 minute's booing at the start of the game and leave it at that

If he scores half as many goals as Messi did last season, we'll be laughing.

We just need to let us play 20 minutes with a golf ball!

I saw Maradona juggle a golf ball whilst wearing formal shows about five years after he stopped playing. Someone threw the golf ball down from the gallery of the place and he just controlled it without letting it touch the floor and started juggling it. Absolutely mindbendingly good.

Oh shut the f*** up, he's just trying to big up a new signing who's had his confidence battered over the past few years. He's doing his job.

think they should all run out, the national anthem takes place, they each then go to a designated spot on the park, look at the floor and stand there whilst abuse if thrown at them for 45 mins. The ref then blows the half time whilstle and the crown break into applause as the team leaves the pitch - only for business as usual to take place in the 2nd half. A Pythonesque moment - especially if they were made to wear blazers too. Get it all done with in one game and move on.
