mac users

i have not one clue about macs, so any help appreciated. my other half's birthday is upcoming and she's mentioned wanting the new OSX, snow leopard or some such name, as a pressie. now is this something which one buys boxed off a shop shelf like one does the latest version of windows, e.g. vista? or does the mac owner need to take their machine into a shop to be upgraded etc? and does it matter which OS she is running now as to whether it'll be a simple upgrade etc?
