Former Liverpool defender Gary Ablett is battling blood cancer. The 44-year-old has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. As reported in the Daily Mirror...

 

Ablett was taken ill last week, soon after agreeing a one-year coaching contract with Ipswich.

 

He had been due to sit alongside manager Roy Keane on the Portman Road bench for the first time in Saturday's friendly with West Ham.

 

A sombre Keane, who recruited Ablett after getting to know him on a coaching course, said after the game: "Gary was taken ill at the training ground and taken to hospital. He is getting the best of treatment."

 

Ablett's family rushed to his bedside. It is expected he will be moved from Suffolk to his native Merseyside this week where intensive treatment will continue. The defender spent nine years at Liverpool from 1983 - where he won two league titles - before joining Everton.

 

Ablett went on to finish his playing career at Birmingham, Blackpool and Wycombe.

At the risk of getting all Larry David about this, is that the bad lymphoma or the 'good' one ?

 

apparently the younger you are the better you do. 44 is alright, its well treatable. probably one of the best cancers to have if that makes sense.

My wife, who works in the field, says it 'usually' curable. A course of chemo and possible radiotherapy. If it has spread in can be very nasty though.

At the risk of getting all Larry David about this, is that the bad lymphoma or the 'good' one ?

 

No way of really saying, non Hodgkins covers a wide array of tumours with varying prognoses, essentially all lymphomas that don't meet the diagnosic criteria of Hodgkins lymphoma. Without knowing whether it is high grade, low grade or the type of cell involved it's difficult to say. Conversely it's the quickly growing high grade lymphomas that tend to respond to chemo and are curable - get well soon Gary.

 

That episode of Curb is great though.

Hope you get well soon Gary.

 

I fecking hate cancer - it killed my other half at 38yrs old, and my brother died from myleoma aged 51yrs :(

Thoughts with Gary and his family.

**** illness (currently ravaging both sides of my family).

Hopefully this will be curable as Downunder posted, but will still be a horrible time for him and his nearest and dearest.

Someone very close to me was diagnosed with high grade aggresive non-hodgkins lymphoma 20 months ago, there life has been a living hell with all the brutal treatment they have been through. Ablett being relatively young he hopefully has a good chance of getting through it.
