My understanding is that you may register no more than 25 senior players (aged 21 or over). Of those no more than 17 may be from overseas.

 

This, I think is the crucial point. If you do not have enough homegrown senior players to make up the numbers to 25, then you have to name a smaller squad.

 

As things stand we have more foreign over 21s on our books than we can register, and we only have 4 (or 5 if Insua stays) homegrown over 21s. In other words we're paying players who we can't play, and we're forced to shop in an over-inflated domestic market for a homegrown backup striker and defender.

 

This probably explains why Hodgson wants Brad Jones, as we could then sell Cavalieri and free up a senior foreign spot for a Figueroa or a Remy (or Klose or whoever else might take his fancy). As it stands the makeup of our squad restricts who we can buy.

You have the rule exactly right, but one of us is miscounting. We only have 22 senior players by my count, 5 home-grown and that means we are right on the edge. If Masch goes, we probably won't buy anyone else (Poulsen is his replacement, right?) and that gives us the 1 slot for an international striker. The problem is if Insua goes and we need to replace him, THEN your scenario is necessary. Obviously Hodgson isn't keen on letting Gulacsi step up (since he would count as home-grown next year, and solve heaps of our problems!!

Yep, fair enough, I'm happy to take your word for it. Either way, as you say we don't have much room for more foreign players, so replacing an overseas reserve keeper with a homegrown one makes sense from the point of view of options.

 

As for Gulacsi, maybe he'll go out on loan? Would be the normal thing for a keeper at his stage of development. Hodgson played him in preseason and he did OK, so I doubt it's because he's not considered good enough to be on the bench.

Good point, besides, its only 2m (which will be more than covered by selling D Cav) and we don't even really need to play him unless Reina gets injured, at which point we can probably take advantage of some of those special rules regarding keeper crisis. Jones' wages will probably be lower too.

 

Of course, the ideal solution is to buy an english striker, but there are none available at the right price.

This is it - prices for homegrown players, especially premium players like half-decent strikers are only going to go up, but if we can clear some space then we can look at cheaper foreign options. Meanwhile if we want squad fillers then we can go for the likes of Luke Young and Brad Jones instead of Cavalieri/Degen/El Zhar etc.
