Cost of living in NY

My family and I - wife, kid and another on the way - maybe moving to NY in the next couple of months. I know that there are a few NY bods on here, so was just wondering if anybody has a good idea of what sort of overall income we would need to live comfortably rather than extravagantly (i.e. we don't eat out much, or go out drinking regularly...).

 

We'd be looking to rent in Brooklyn (and I have an idea of what kind of range we'd pay for rental), but having had a few job interviews, and told them what I'd like to be earning, I'm now a bit worried that the figure I've been giving companies is too low...

 

 

Edit: I don't think my possibly moving to NY is the reason Macca is exploring moving to Australia
