core i3 vs core i5 vs core2duo

need to buy a laptop and the price difference is not that much.. is a graphics card of any use as that bumps the price up from the shared ones.. im thinking of getting hp or compaq presario and run xp on it.. is windows 7 worth the hype or will xp do the job.. just need to use to surf net..play footbal manager and maybe do a bit of work on ms office..
