Every time I watch Villa he doesn't half remind me of Robbie Fowler in his style and the type of player he is.

Was thinking that had Robbie been a bit luckier with injuries and looked after himself better, he could have achieved the same kind of things Villa has on a bigger scene. The movement, stature, intelligence, instinctive range of finishing with either foot - makes me think of Robbie at his best.

Two of the best poachers I've ever seen those two, and not far behind the best poacher of the modern era for me - the great Romario.

Villa is miles better than Robbie

I think Villa is better, but its hard to say how good robbie could have become, if he hadnt suffered all those injuries.

Villa is a much more flexible player in terms of being able to play in different areas of the pitch and still have a massive influence. he is a great little player.

I think what it is, (and I'm judging current Villa against peak Fowler) when you look at them neither is quick, or big and strong.

Physically neither is outstanding, and its all about their purely God given gift for scoring goals. The game has become so much about physical attributes these days (particularly in England) and I just love watching Villa because he is what I would call a pure footballer, pure talent and nothing to do with how big he is or how fast.

He is the anti-Cisse.

yeah agree. seems to have fowler's finishing with either foot and someone like beardsley's intelligence outside the box. fantastic player.

Fowler was better as a kid than Villa is now

Villa has done it at the highest possible level

Fowler at best, is a poor man's Villa

Agree with Rory - Villa looks pretty nippy to me.

He's fantastic. He'll score bundles for Barca next year.

Villa has a great eye for goal and gets into fantastic positions in and around the box. Fowler was more of a box player, but I think his accuracy was better than Villa's.

Villa is much better with the ball at his feet outside the box, imo.

I loved Fowler, though. His link-up play was underrated.

Fowler never got picked at the highest level, cos he was still a kid.

Its ridiculous how many he'll score in that team. Wonder what the odds are of him reaching 50 for the season?

They were both at the 'top of their profession'

As was Danny Dichio though

Think you are underestimating how strong Villa is Leo, he gets kicked a lot and he just stands up to it (like Torres can when isn't in a nark), seen him give it back as well. Think his Dad is a miner so he is from a fairly tough background.

I think that Villa and Fowler both have that same 'instinctive' nature to some of their finishing.

Take the goal Villa scored against Chile for example. The keeper may have been out of goal, but it was still a good 45 yards out, but Villa didn't think twice about going first time on his weaker foot. I could totally imagine Fowler doing something just like that.

Opportunism, eye for goal and total faith in his ability.

A little harsh on Fowler but then again I doubt you'll see Villa struggling to get a game in Australia in a few years time. Fowler should have been a truly great player. He had everything required to be one except, it seems, self-discipline.

villa is a very different player to fowler. no way fowler's waiting out wide on the touchline to go past 3 defenders with skill and speed.
