First British / European winner of the US Open in 40 years!

Brilliant achievement, he has been in form and won a European Tour event a couple of weeks ago but the US Open is probably the toughest major to win for a European player. The overnight leader Dustin Johnson fell apart completely with triple bogey at two, double at three and eventually going on to an 82.

All the big guns were in there just behind him - Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els but McDowell held them all off to win it, as the only player not over par (he finished level par). A French guy who scraped into the tournament through qualifying came second Gregory Havret which was also some effort.

McDowell in form like this will have a decent chance at The Open as well, though Tiger is coming into form and he loves St Andrews...
