I'm out in Asia at the moment. After having had to put up with the s****ness of football analysis on local satellite I decided to see if there was a workable way of watching the world cup on RTE. I've started using a private proxy service called Identity Cloaker (here) and it is working reasonably well so far. I got to watch both games in full screen with little or no stutter and have access to the pre- and post-game analysis which is the real attraction. I also been using it to watch the GAA in the last couple of weeks and again I've had no problems.

It is a paid for service but it only costs 5 euros for a 10 day trial or 30 for a 3 month subscription. It is primarily intended for PC based systems but I got it to run fine on my Mac in about ten minutes using Parallels.

If you're abroad and looking for RTE or BBC coverage then its definitely worth looking at.

Brilliant! Friend of mine was looking for exactly this sort of thing for the World Cup.

I've always found that the best football analysis is when you watch it in a language you don't understand. :)

So Motson then...

I've just got a uk and us dual vpn for $10 a month for this purpose. iplayer, and zattoo work fine.

tvcatchup did until about a few hours ago, now its blocked.

i heard that proxies can be dodgy security wise, so went down the vpn route.

They can be but I'm using it with openVPN and watching on a copy of Chrome running in Parallels so it should be fine.

Can you watch it live? or is it only afterwards when it's been uploaded?

Watching it live online at the moment. They also upload some of the analysis to the world cup site later on and you can see repeats on RTE Live once the coverage is over.

RTE actually have a link up on their site for people who want to watch their coverage while abroad. Doesn't work everywhere (don't think it works in the UK for example) but it might be handy for some.

From here: http://www.rte.ie/sp...up/ebu_cbp.html

a friend of mine tried the eurovision link to RTE out from Spain but didn't have any luck.

I use WiTopia.net's VPN software for $60/year. There are gateways in a bunch of countries including Canada, Ireland, UK, and the US.

What's the quality like? The only complaint I have about the Identity Cloaker service is download speed which can be poor every now and again.

I mostly use it for BBC iPlayer and Hulu and the quality has been fine. It glitched a few times when I tried streaming HD content from iPlayer but that was due being on a terrible internet connection at the time.

Was in Ho Chi Minh City over the weekend. It was a really great to watch some of the game and Apres Match on TV there!

BTW, are there adverts for Pepsi all over the place in Europe featuring Fernando Torres covered in body paint? That could have only seemed like a good idea after a couple of grams of Bolivian marching powder. The bloody things are everywhere in Vietnam. I think I even saw them at the Cu Chi tunnels which was almost as confusing as seeing Coca Cola on sale there.

It's plastered over nearly every double decker bus in Dublin.
