THE ECHO can exclusively reveal that Rafa Benitez today donated £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group as he gets set to leave Merseyside.

The former Liverpool FC boss, who was today confirmed as the new manager at Inter Milan, handed over the cheque to Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the HFSG, as the rest of the committee watched on this afternoon.

In a low key visit to the group's office, Benitez wished the group well and told them he hoped they would get the justice and the truth they are campaigning for.

Mrs Aspinall said: "It was just nice to know that he wanted to see us before he went."

Legend.

Rafa donates a huge sum of money to a fantastic cause, shows what a legend he is.

And someone thiunks its not worth its own thread?

By the way, I said ages ago that I'd be really happy for Rafa when he goes - the state of the club at the moment, he's a million miles better off in Milan.

Well in Rafa.

Pure class from Rafa. I'm sure he has a million things to be thinking about with the impending move to Milan but to do this on the first day back is sheer class.

Rafa has always been class in his professional and personal conduct and this is a great way to say good bye. Great man and a sad loss to Liverpool FC. Well done Rafa

I don't think anyone ever doubted that the man is a class act.

Legend status for me, one of the few band of proper heroes to have been associated with our club, proud to say he was ours.

Trying not to be OTT, but I understand the feelings Shankly gave the people now, and I'm gutted he's gone.

Don't forget Margaret Aspinall in all this. She is the classiest of class acts and one of the few people around who can make you feel humbled just by what she says. Spoke to her before and she kept saying 'you don't know what this money means to us, it'll keep us going for years'. It's the very least that she and they deserve and I'm made up it came from someone who respects them as much as they respect him. We haven't had too many good days lately when someone associated with our club has done something of which we can all be proud but this is undoubtedly one.

a real shame that there is no chance of playing inter next season, would be great to welcome rafa back and give him the send off he truly deserves

Unless he takes them into the UEFA Cup...

Not going to happen, I know.

Well in Rafa - YNWA

Its really sinking in now, we had a manager who knew what it was to be part of our club and our incompetent, greedy, manipulating, board got rid of him. What a f***ing joke we have become.

I was down the local tonight and I heard a United fan tell my mate that Rafa donated one hundred grand to the HFSG. I thought I must have misheard or something but I came back and saw this... Speechless. Acts of such incredible decency are heart-warming always but in these circumstances it's always so much better. Thank you, Rafa Benítez. Thank you so much.

yep. He deserves much better than to work for these c****. Hes a lot better off there, and this act shows the class of the man. Too much class and honour for the yank c**** and Purslow.

And to think, we didnt even have a chance to say goodbye. Atleast Houlier got that much...

Classy move Purslow and Co, very classy.

Has he gone to Juve yet? The thread-stitching has been ridiculous lately.

But well in Rafa, nice gesture.

echo that x times 100. I've only heard her voice in person once but it was enough for me.

Loads of respect to Rafa, it shows the man he is.

Part of me regrets with has now made the "nationals" (Beeb are running with the story) as you don't want the gesture to get "corrupted" by them into being seen as a publicity stunt

know what you mean but two things. one, any publicity for the hillsborough cause is good publicity and two, what does benitez care now? he's the manager of the european champions and certainly doesn't need the publicity himself.

nationals running it is great in fact.
