Red Kent Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 His goal against Mexico only confirmed to me that he has to play right midfield. He offers a lot more to the team from there than at right back.
magneto Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Or we work on his defensive abilities Does Daniel Alves play right midfield? Did Cafu? Does Maicon? I'm sure he can still play in defense, just needs coaching.
sean Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 He was caught short a few times his man running infield and Johnson was caught wrong side. That's basic enough stuff for a full back, no? Coaching my a***, schoolboy stuff for full back to tuck around goal side and not watch the bloody ball.
richwilks Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 12 months ago we were crying out for an Alves type player. We get one and we moan that he can't defend.
Dan Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 12 months ago we were crying out for an Alves type player. We get one and we moan that he can't defend. Its b*llocks isn't it. Johnson was one of few positives last season. Playing at RB.
Benzo-13 Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Get a more defensive left back and it all sorts itself out.
sean Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I like him a lot but I don't believe his shortcomings are a coaching issue, more that he's a huge threat going forward and his focus and concentration does tend to drop when he's defending.
DecidedByPoll Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I thought his defending was excellent last night and the run through on goal tfrom the Mexican that he was late to was actually a piece of terrible defending from Ferdinand who broke out of the flat 4 leaving a gap behind him. Johnson is a right back, a good one and one who seems rated by Capello. Capello is not often wrong and you won't see Capello playing him at right midfield.
Boca Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 He's a right back. Leave him at right back. With Aurelio leaving the priority this summer has to be a quality left back which will hopefully solve a lot of the issues the back four had last season.

I didn't hear a jot of blame for Johnson.
Tones Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Keep him at RB. One of our few positives this year, pity he was out injured for so long.
Davvo Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Which practically every pundit spotted. I didn't hear a jot of blame for Johnson. Which there would have been if there was a sniff of blame to be attached to him, it being the in thing to have a go at this year. He looks good coming forward because of the space afforded a RB in possession, he wouldn't get the same opportunities at RM, and who knows whether he'd adapt or not. Madness to consider shifting him, regardless of how good Kelly may look.
Conrad Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Its b*llocks isn't it. Johnson was one of few positives last season. Playing at RB. We have been crying out for a top quality attacking full back for years. We have one for RB now. Johnson is excellent at RB. it's LB we need to address this summer.
richwilks Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 it's LB we need to address this summer. Yep, need a quality player in there. Insua is fine as backup. Kelly as backup for Johnson.
Molby Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I agree with him at RB but not if he can't bomb forward if that was the case then I'd put him at RM if Kelly comes through as a good RB if you recall, he bombed forward at the start of the season, then less so. If someobody made him stop, they's better unmake him stop or put him RM and Kuyt up front again or we'll end up with another serious of horrible compromises and confusing inneffectual instructions/player performances next season...disguised as players that won't take instructions
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 the way we play - with 2 holding MF, we can afford to have FBs who bomb up. Early in the season it did cost us a few goals, but we were also scoring loads. Then he got injured & we stopped scoring (Torres was also permanently f***ed)
Jarg Armani Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 This is so stupid. Inter Milan had Eto'o at right back when they won the European Cup the other night. It's like Gerrard said last night when they asked him about 442 - to paraphrase - 'it's a lot more fluid than that, we need to be able to adapt and play different positions depending on what is happening in the game'. What I mean is, just because Johnson's at right back in that little graphic sky put on, and he's standing there when they kick off, doesn't mean he can't do what he did last night, when, as Mike points out, HE WAS PLAYING AS A RIGHT BACK.
Spion kop Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 it would leave us short of a right back, keep him there and work on his defensive game. Sometimes the threat itself of an attacking full back is a defensive bonus.

Jarg Armani Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 so we need players that can take instructions but are also.....good Babel, always at RM A player who fits neither of your criteria... Agree with the rest of what you said broadly, as I think it boils down to the manager making braver choices and the players backing it through the course of the 90, not going into the shell as soon as trouble appears and headbutts skrtel. (off topic)I emailed you through the forum a week or so ago, did you get it?
