David Hodgson Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 We're all getting more pessimistic by the day, I think, about our prospects of getting properly taken over before next season starts. So what happens next ? What will Broughton (and f*cking Purslow) be seeing as a the short term (perhaps one season) strategy) ? I think they may settle to the fact that it may be safer to keep Rafa at the helm, let the big names leave, but give the manager the bulk of what he brings in, in sales. So for Rafa it could come down to Champ manager time. Here's (roughly) who I think he might shift and what money will come in : Torres £65,000,000 Gerrard £35,000,000 Mascherano £27,000,000 Skrtel £6,000,000 Benayoun £7,000,000 Riera £6,000,000 Babel £10,000,000 Ngog £4,000,000 Spearing £1,000,000 Plessis £500,000 El Zhar £1,500,000 That's £163m worth of sales. Let's say he does a deal with Broughton whereby £30m of that goes back into the pot to help with the interest bill for one more year whilst they look for buyers. That leaves Rafa with £133m to rebuild. Could he put together a team from that capable of challenging for 3rd or 4th ? I think the answer is potentially yes. If he works well in the market and gets his old mojo back it's do-able. Here's his (my) fantasy (delusional ?)wish list : Cahill £14,000.000Martinez £18,000.000Anelka zeroJoe Cole zeroKenwynne Jones £13,000,000Turan £13,000,000Ashley Young £30,000,000,Ireland £10,000,000Jovanovic zeroWilson £2m That's £100m. The balance could go on another decent striker or left back, and contribute towards wage deals for Anelka and Cole. Our first team might then look something like this : ---------------------------------------------------Reina Johnson-----------------Carragher--------------------Cahill-----------------------Agger Cole----------------------------Martinez---------------Ireland------------------------------Young --------------------------------------------------Turan -------------------------------------------------------Anelka Subs : Kuyt, Jovanovic, Aquilani, Kenwynne Jones, Wilson, Kelly, Cavilieri Motivated, gelled and with Rafa engendering a siege mentality (as the media totally write us off) I can see that squad doing well. What do other readers think ?

Epic Swindle Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Not very realistic. I'd rather just keep the bulk of the squad together and off load the dregs. If Rafa wants to sell one of the big stars I think Masch is probably the most saleable asset who won't cause irreparable damage, maybe even Stevie if he's thinking of leaving.
Sion Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 This is the worst transfer post I think I ever read on here. It makes NYR look reasonable. Sell Torres for £65m and use all that money to buy Ashley Young, Kenwynne Jones and Gary Cahill? Jesus Christ
takanohana Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 No offence but if that's a glass half full scenario, I'd hate to see your pessimistic view. That's the most depressing post and team-sheet I've ever seen...

Damian_de Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 IMO if we raised £163M through sales Rafa'd see a hell of a lot less than £133M back in the transfer kitty, and that is the real danger of selling anyone, really. Given the scenario... I do believe that for £133M he could build a side that would make the CL next season, yup. Has any side ever changed 7 first 11 players in a single summer?

Fine, sack Rafa, get Woy Hodgson in. We may well lose our big 3 players. What happens next ? Our new manager just curls into a ball and cries ? surf Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 someone needs to reboot hodgson or hit him with a hammer. sell torres, gerrard and masch? he's gone mad
Kite Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Certainly get a vivid sense of a lot of our players may want to go now. Perhaps the impending World Cup will benefit us by being a sufficient distraction to stop players sorting out their plans for a while, by which time maybe we'll know something more definite about the future of the club, be it new investment or holding tight for another year. But eleven players out, eleven players in is a frightening amount of change to a squad that was nearly there last season, especially with Rafa not being the best "man manager" etc.
D.Boon Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I think you should put the computer down and go for a nice Sunday walk, you loon.

I'm just saying that if the current stalemate continues we are going to lose them so we really need a plan B.
Lark Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 We have 20m transfer kitty which is to include contract extenstions. i dont know if the sales of dossena and voronin cover the buys of wilson, shelvy or whether there fees have been taken from the 20m summer transfer kitty. I know reina has signed a contract extenstion, dont know of any other players. If the latter then i presume we have around 17m to spend this summer. i presume that if we spend the entire 17m budget on two players and then for example rafa sells torres for 80m - we will be allowed to spend some of that torres sale money but no more than the 80m. For exanple We could buy players upto 20/30/40/60m quid but not the entire 80m and the money left over after purchases would immediately go to the existing debt, which i believe is something between 20 - 40m. The standard chartered deal kicks in this summer and we have a guarenteed additional 20m from over seas premiership rights. That might pay off the interest payments which might allow for a higher margin on player sales to be reinvested in the squad. Thats my understanding of our finances based on the accounts and purslows comments to sos about the transfer kitty.
Kite Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Does anyone know if the Standard Chartered deal had any kind of performance related aspect, eg will our not being in the CL affect the money being paid to us?

Benzo-13 Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Knox's thread was less dramatic, more realistic and better.

They'd be completely and utterly daft not to surely, even if it were a 'cert' such as such for Chelsea or Man Utd instead of us.

Rocheteau Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Wholesale changes are completely unnecessary, smack of desperation and the psychology of which would have unintended consequences Its actually not a bad squad, what it lacks is confidence consistency and maybe a different direction Replace anyone who needs to go and strengthen the left back and striker options but beyond that we are more than capable of being a top four side

We're sub-League 1, need to sell everyone down to and including the groundsman and stewards, and with the £4.72 left after paying the banks we'll buy Messi, Ronaldo, Drogba, Zlatan, Alonso, Hyypia, Banks, Styles, both Charltons, King Kenny, Rush and the Tooth Fairy. Then, and only then, can we start our assault on the Conference
Beardsley Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 It lacks more than confidence, it lacks speed and that is down to Rafa's buying policy.
