New hd tv - forum wisdom required

Just been reading up on the tv thread in the archives - http://www.ynwa.tv/forum/index.php?showtopic=140072&hl=hd%20television&st=0

 

Our tv has just died, so we are looking to replace it with a lovely big hd tv. Going by the archive thread the panasonic vieras and the samsungs come out recommended, but the samsungs have sound trouble - does this still hold true or have they sorted them out?

 

LCD, LED or plasma? My brother has a Samsung HD without a HD signal and to me it looks like there is a definite distinction between the foreground and background, is this cos it hasnt got a HD signal input? We've got Sky+ HD so need the ful hd thing.

 

Not sure how big we need to go with the tv, so i'm gonna do some research but any other tips will be appreciated.

 

Anyone got a good deal recently? There's of stuff with Sony tv's and cashback for handing in your old tv. Also others where you get all your money back if england win the world cup! Any more serious deals you know about?

 

Is it worth going to John Lewis with their free 5 yr guarantee, heard good things about richer sounds too?
