not so sure, they have a decent team and appy arry will always wheel and deal his way to some new boys along the way.

they now have some depth in their squad and a reasonable defence.

they may not have too many flashy players, but they play as a team.

If Citeh continue to spend, the fight for 4th will be tougher and tougher if we don't get our act together.

It's good from our perspective that City missed out. I'm sure they will keep spending regardless but it makes them less attractive for a lot of top players.

They've spent a serious amount of money in the last 2-3 years. Far more than us and Arsenal. It was about time they got a return on that.

Net spend (oh yes!) since '06/'07 season is £74 million from a gross spend of £300+ million.

Villa's net spend is £80 million in the same period. Gross spend of only £130+ million though.

Compare and contrast with our spending lately. Makes you marvel at last season even more.

you're not allowed to use United's net spend in the argument - thems the rules

About £10 million net spend. But then they did sell Ronald in that period. .

Don't be silly, it is perfectly valid to include them. They have outperformed everyone in that regard. Which is why Ferguson is rated so highly.

It is also a powerful argument for keeping your manager on through a blip or two so he can deliver such impressive results...

Although before this season they have a net spend for that period of close to £100 million and had a couple of titles to show for it and a European Cup win too. Since they have cut their net spend so dramatically they have a League Cup and, if the results don't go their way this weekend, not much else.

This whole net spend thing is starting to look like it may have some weight afterall.

no, you can, as long as you omit some transfers, like the Ronaldo one

We were talking about Spurs. Nevermind though, eh, just as long as Rafa gets the sack we'll be fine.

...and for the record, if Utd don't spend some money this summer they're going to be in a lot of trouble next season. We've seen what can happen when you don't spend much for two seasons in a row and they can't rely on everyone else being s*** much longer. Chelsea are going to spend and so are City. Arsenal may do something stupid and actually buy a decent keeper and then that leaves Utd with 3 challengers for top spot rather than just the usual 1.

Spurs have done well, even though I thought they were pretty poor the 2 times we played them.

Never thought Redknapp had it in him, he's completely turned the club around since he arrived.

How far do you reckon they'll go? I think they might scrape through the group depending on who they get.

I think they'll struggle to get to the group stage if they have to face someone like Sevilla

ledley king's f***ing boss.

Best in the league really isn't he.

Should be a cert for the World Cup. For all his problems, he's played more than Ferdinand this season.

Redknapp is and always has been a good club manager in the English game. He seems to be the butt of loads of people's jokes on here, but in reality he has done a good job at pretty much every club he's managed. The fact that they've all gone bust later on is really more likely to be coincidence!

I think the main reason for the hatred of Redknapp is because of all the love he gets from some of the more irritating pundits. But in fairness thats hardly his fault, and he comes scross as a nice enough bloke, is pretty fair in his post match assessments and always speaks well of Liverpool.

They've already started spending.

That is hardly his fault. The chairman and the CEO are the ones in charge of financial side.

Realistically, do you think its possible Redknapp has stolen the gigantic amounts of money these clubs are indebted to the tune of and got away with it?

These clubs have been horribly mismanaged by their owners and directors. Harry Redknapp might not be adverse to a little backhander from agents for all I know, but even if that was true its small potatoes in Portsmouth's £125m debt.

a backhander is a backhander, it's unethical and it's wrong

do you think, if for example, an agent had came to houllier* and told him that if he can convince Liverpool to spend 5m on Diao that he will make sure that Houllier will get a nice gift in return?

*just used houllier as an example, not saying that he acted wrong in anyway during his time at the club

would that be the same peter storrie who has been at every club alongside redknapp which is now financially screwed? bournemouth, west ham, southampton and portsmouth? why yes it would. the coincidences just mount up don't they?
