Sizing market opportunity for software products

Anybody got experience on trying to estimate the potential market size for a B2B solution? From a high level and to give me a starting pt. not looking for an in-depth plan!

 

I often hear people saying things like there are 500k small and medium businesses in the UK if we could capture 1% of that market then our turnover would be XXXXXXX - seems a bit finger in the wind to me - there must be a better way?!!
