I'm in 2 minds about this. Maybe its time to refocus on our domestic campaign and build a side that can qualify for the champions league ? The UEFA cup early rounds are loads of games and maybe our squad isn't equipped to handle both european matches and a league campaign. It could be a burden leading to a failure to qualify for the CL again.

On the other hand, I love European football more than the league in many ways and its deep into the fabric of this club. Thought we had a real chance of winning it and would have been a crazy end to the season in an Alavez final sort of way.

In fact European football itself would feel the loss of this club. The other thing is that it might inspire players to want to play for us if we are at least in the UEFA cup.

Can't make my mind up but i'm leaning towards the, f*** it lets concentrate on the league for once. What do you think ?

most of the early games are against bobbins teams, so we can play the Pachecos, Nemeths etc

I dunno. I hate football right now. Like, REALLY hate it

I've seen many worse seasons, just not seasons where it feels like the gods are s***ting down our throats while anally raping us with barbed wire

a good run is still worth a few millions, and beggars can't be choosers

but miss out on those millions and G&H will have to drop their asking price

1 st qualifying round is 18 days after the end of the world cup i think.

use it as a pre-season friendly then, surely a bit better as its actualy competitive on some level rather than the usual pre season dross

Pre season friendlies/tournaments will usually earn a fair bit of money, where as playing two legs against the 4th best team in Latvia won't.

fair enough, I'm sure the comp game might be better for the players fitness though. Still money rules the roost and f*** everything else. I assume we're off to China to play FC Buckaroo Bongo and the onto LA to square off against the stellar LA Galaxy then?

A few of the players would probably benefit more from some extra rest, but unfortunately we'll probably be playing the qualifiers then straight off to play FC Buckaroo!

We've turned into Spurs - bloody depressing.

Would rather sack the Europa off TBH but we need the income from it.

IF it's actually up to them, I doubt it will factor that much, they will still consider this a CL club with CL income, they're considering us a club with a 60k stadium remember. But hopefully it's not up to them as all the recent moves seem to indicate.

Not so. A homeless man once turned down a proffered ciggie as he didn't smoke menthol

I don't want us to qualify for it. I'd rather we put some actual effort in the FA and League Cups for a change.

Thursday night games in Eastern Ukraine and Romania and then away matches on the Sunday in the PL? No thanks.

That's odd, smoking a menthol is like brushing your teeth.

Well we are in it now - baring some really really odd results

6th or 7th???

Not quite sure why the qualifying moved from 6th place to include 7th place too - why was that? because of Portsmouth's appeal failing?

Ant mentioned that on the web some people are suggesting if Fulham beat Madrid then they will take our place in next season's competition. Trawled UEFA's site and found nothing, but found this on WIKI.

The Title-Holder

The winner of the 2009–10 Europa League is guaranteed an entry into the group stage of the 2010-11 competition (unless they qualify for any stage of the Champions League). The default team allocation system is constructed under the assumption that the Title Holder has not qualified for the Champions League and has not already qualified for the Europa League through domestic means. If this is not the case, the allocation of teams across the qualification rounds has to be adjusted accordingly.[3]

If the Title Holder has qualified for the Europa League domestically, their association is not given an additional team entry. Instead, the Title Holder is moved from whichever qualification round their domestic placing entitled them to, and is placed directly into the group stage. This would then require some alteration to the default allocation system.

If the Title Holder has not qualified for the Europa League domestically, they are entered as an additional team for their association. This effects neither the default allocation system, nor the other entrants from their association. However, it should be noted that the Title Holder entry is given priority over the Fair Play entries, which are given out only at the very last.[3]

The 2009-10 Europa League Final will be played between Atlético Madrid and Fulham. Given that neither of these teams can qualify for the Champions League, the Title Holder place in the group stage will definately be occupied by whomever wins the final. However, as one of these possible Title Holders (namely Atlético Madrid) may qualify domestically for the Europa League, the allocation of other teams may have to be adjusted when one of the Spanish places is effectively left vacant.

The remaining possible situations of the Title Holder are summarised below:

The Title Holder place is taken by Fulham

As Fulham cannot qualify for the Europa League domestically, they will be entered into the Group Stage with no changes to the default allocation of teams.

The important bits are in bold.

If I'm honest, I'd rather not be in it. I hate the playing Thursday / Sunday thing.

However, we really have no idea if next season our target is likely to be win the league (sugar daddy) or avoid relegation (sell all our best players, and/or go into admin and get points deducted)

So it's really hard to give a sh*t.
