Thank f*** this season is finishing soon..I was thinking whether we can ever win the title with the likes of Carra who criminally waste the ball. I have loved his passion but this season we were exposed by have two centrebacks in Carra and Kiri who are no good with ball at their feet.. Do we need to spend top money on a centreback as well.. the rebuilding job is going to be expensive..

You have a terrible record of writing off legends though

no one is writing him off and lets keep it on topic.. Is Carras use to the ball comparable to the likes of Pique, Ferdinand, Carvalho, Terry.. How many times does he just hoof it when he is not even under pressure..

Carragher's reading of the game, his experience and his organisational skills are all going to be a big part of what he can offer for another 2-3 years.

He may gradually start playing less like Hyypia in his last couple of seasons, but he is still very important to us.

we need ideally a strong aerially dominant cb to come in during the summer, and we need to defend better as a unit and push a bit higher up.

But after a shaky start, Carra has not had a bad season. I would prefer him to give it short and let someone else start our attacks though.

I wouldn't say out of his depth, he's had to hold the defence together at times with all the injuries and changes, not to mention babysitting two defensively suspect full backs, but his distribution is getting worse, which is a pity because he's not actually a bad footballer. I wouldn't write him off as his experience is vital but I'd like to see him used a lot more sparingly next season so we can start building another partnership.

His use of the ball has never been brilliant. He hoofs too much but that is as often due to a lack of option in front of him as much as him choosing to hoof.

It would be great to upgrade Skrtel this summer, and have 3 good options like Chelsea have, with the Greek as well. But with our finances the way they are it wouldn't be my priority personally. Badly need a new left back and need another attacking option

Thats an interesting point. I think Carra is a better 'footballer' than he gives himself credit for. He should be abit more confident on the ball. He's too safety first at times

carragher is a great defender. not a great footballer,it was ever thus.

I'm going to say that Carra doesnt trust himself and the players in front of him. Its a sweeping statement with exceptions but I think that he gets more comfort from bypassing midfield than playing it to feet and seeing the players lose it and then the opposition are on top of him and its his lack of pace that worries him in that situation.

I think he has had a poor season, I think everyone has.

He had a shakey start, was written off by some blerts (as usual) then come flying back (as usual).

Theres always a worry when he has a dip given how old he's becoming but he's still a very good defender and not a problem at all. His distribution is annoying at times but first and foremost he's a defender which generally he's brilliant at.

He's always been a good player. When he's stood in at right back he's got forward and put in some cracking crosses, but for whatever reason at centre back he's very panicky in posession. There's nothing wrong with safety first, I'd rather he cleared his lines under pressure than start trying to be clever, but this season especially he's resorting to just wellying it up in the air when there's time to have a look and keep it ticking over. He's also developed this habit of moving into space and floating a nothing ball down the channels.

He really hasn't came back flying. he's had a poor season and would be the first to admit it.

I think he still has one season in him as a regular and then its into the Sami role. hopefully.

Yes he has, we had a big run of clean sheets and even in defeats like against Utd he was outstanding. I think he's done well at centre back and right back.

I'd like to think he'd recognise that playing less would prolong his career but he's the type of character who just wants to play every game. I think we'd have got another season out of the big fella too.

Alonso used to come and drag the ball off him. Since he's been gone the hoofs have quadrupled.

He was awful until moved to rightback for a few games. I know he says he hates it there but I think it just gave him a break - he didn't have to cover & over-compensate for poor fullbacks and he actually seemed to enjoying charging down the touchline; when he's played there before he never got forward like that. It did him the world of good.

Terry, Ferdinand etc however have not infrequent howlers. Carra is a bastion of reliability

True - like Tendulkar.

why does he skip before he punts it?

Always wondered the same thing :D

Totally agree, Carra has been the only consistent defender this season. He looks right he sees Johnson (Can't defend), he looks left and sees Insua (Can't defend), he's never had a consistent partner in the middle either. He's been doing the jobs of three defenders at times.

Best of a bad bunch.

Though Johnson will get better.
