CarraLegend Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 We'll see over the next few years. Makes mistakes in defence but more than makes up for it in attack. Far from a problem at the mo.
Molby Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 good, until he was told to hold...alongside our other holding players
Swipe Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Looked excellent at the start of the season, but has waned somewhat. The injury took a bit out of him, to be fair. Still think he'll prove to be a good signing, but he looks like he's been told to curb his attacking, which is pointless for him. He was Carra-esque last night in getting to the halfway line, turning, and kicking it back to the centre half. Edited April 23, 2010 by Swipe

Epic Swindle Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 He's seriously overrated and overpriced. He's average defensively, and after a good start offensively, is no longer providing a consistant outlet on the flank and is instead resorting to hoofing it at every opportunity. Whether that's down to instructions I don't know, but I'd definately have prefered to spend the money in the summer on a striker.
Bailo Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 He's about 341st on my list of worries about the club. Was he overpriced? Possibly, but that's English players for you. Would he have made Chelsea better? Arguably. Can he improve? Definitely. I'm sure Rafa would have rather have had a striker though.

He had to stop bombing forward as he was leaving us exposed and costing us goals and games. Unfortunately, asking him to defend has exposed some flaws in his game. Either play him on the wing or as a wingback or get a feckin' fast CB who can cover the huge gaps he leaves
Zoob Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 With Gerrard off-form, he looks about as likely as anyone to create something, and other than the much injured Torres and the patchy Benayoun is about the only player we have who can dribble past people.. His positive contribution to our attack has been far greater than any negative impact some weak defending has had (and to be fair, he had one dodgy period, but has actually been pretty stable defensively). I think he's been an excellent signing.

Kvarme Ate My Food Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 He'd be great on the wing in a 4-4-2 I'm not sure.we used to say that about Heggem but his attacking ability just didn't translate into being able to play on the wing as I recall.
D.Boon Posted April 23, 2010 Author Posted April 23, 2010 you'd think that with Masch, Kuyt and Lucas in the side we could legislate for an attacking full back ffs If only we had a sherman tank at right mid to cover.
Epic Swindle Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 He had to stop bombing forward as he was leaving us exposed and costing us goals and games. Unfortunately, asking him to defend has exposed some flaws in his game. I'm not sure why we bought him then. I thought given we had limited pace and width on the flank with Kuyt, he would come in to provide a consistant threat on the outside, even if it meant slightly less solidity in defence. But he looks to have stopped doing what comes natural to him. Again, I'm not sure if that's due to tactics.
fyds Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 you'd think that with Masch, Kuyt and Lucas in the side we could legislate for an attacking full back ffsIt's often Kuyt who fills in behind him if an attack breaks down as those defensive frailties in Johnson's game re indecision, positioning, getting the wrong side of the man etc that we all discussed at the time of his signing are exposed. He has to work on them to suit the team - he'll be fine if her does
Epic Swindle Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 To use a full back like Evra as an example, whose biggest strenth is his offensive ability, you see him looking to get beyond the opposition full back at every opportunity and that gives the mancs so much more firepower and options to open teams up, even when it's a tight defensive game.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 He's just taking time to recover from the injury. At the same time, the whole team's playing like s****, so it's no wonder he doesn't look amazing. Who does, apart from Pepe?
Earl Hafler Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Would be better alongside a quicker centre back.
Epic Swindle Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Would be better alongside a quicker centre back. True. I think he'd be better in a quicker more forward thinking team all round. We seem to buy a lot of players and try and change their natural attacking games and they struggle to adapt for a while.

baz2107 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Think he's had a decent season, not quite hit heights of his first few games but it seems to be its more to do with him being restricted by tactics (and a generally static team) The fee should be ignored for 2 reasons 1) he's English and that adds a 1/3 to most signings (cant say don't buy English because of quotas)2) We got him from Pompey who owed us 7m for Crouch still, with the way Pompeys season has gone what are the likelihoods we'd have got that money from them to spend elsewhere?
