My wife has been looking after a diary written by a guy who fought in the first world war. Her friend passed it onto her (nearly 20) years ago. As she is a history teacher, she has now used it many classes - even this past week, teaching a class of kids in Melbourne. She has always intended to track down the author's family as she feels it would be appropriate to return this story to them.

The guy was originally from Everton and the diary documents his short time in France in 1917. Sadly, the diary ends abruptly in September of that year. She has checked the net a few times over the years to see if she could find out any more information about the author but, until today, she drew a blank. Today's check discovered a photo of his grave and revealed that he died a week after his last entry.

I'm assuming that, as nearly a century has passed, his immediate family will also have passed so I don't think it is insensitive to use this forum as a means of trying to contact whoever may be the rightful owner.

The guy's name was Charles Thoel and, as I said, he was from Everton. Anyone know of someone with that surname?
