Romania striker Adrian Mutu suspended for nine months

Mutu tested positive after a serie A match

Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has been suspended for nine months by the Italian Olympic Committee after failing anti-doping tests in January.

Mutu twice tested positive for appetite suppressant sibutramine after games against Bari and Lazio, and will be unable to play until 29 October.

"I'm not happy. A suspension this long for a laxative seems excessive," said the Fiorentina and Romania star, 31.

In 2004, Mutu received a seven-month ban for testing positive for cocaine.

Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant drug mainly used to help obese people, although it was recently banned in the UK amid fears over the increased risks of heart attacks and strokes.

The striker had told prosecutors that the traces of sibutramine found in his tests were the result of slimming tablets given to him for his mother.

Mutu reacted angrily to the ruling, saying: "I feel this is a harsh punishment. It seems too much. I expected less because, yes, the mistake was made, it's right to pay, but not so much.

"I would like to add that I am sorry for having left Fiorentina without my services for the next few months, both for the club and for the fans."

Mutu will certainly be a big loss for the Serie A club, having scored 50 goals in 91 appearances since joining after a disappointing spell with Juventus, effectively rebuilding his career in Florence following his 2004 drugs ban.

There had been speculation linking him with a move away from the Viola this summer, but that now seems unlikely given the ban.

His lawyer said the Romania captain has not ruled out an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Romania's qualifying campaign for the 2012 European Championship gets under way on 3 September.

Chelsea should get f*** all. They initiated this, could've done this discreetly and got a transfer fee for him.

They handled it vindictively and shouldn't get a dime.

Talking about this to a Chelsea mate last night, he wants to know why the guys habit didn't show up on the test and toxicology reports etc during his physical in the first place. Only thing we came up with was that they were quiet happy to ignore it whilst he was supposed to an amazing on fire player, all that changed when it became known he wasn't all that after all!!

Nonsense. They did the right thing. What are you suggesting? That they should have sneakily sold him to someone else so he became their problem?

He had a value. The club paid for him and he p*ssed his value up the wall.

I might hate Chelsea, but they did the right thing here. It was a good warning to all of football.

He made a massive mistake and suffered the consequences by being sacked and then not being paid for 7/8 months.

By sacking him, they released his registration and then they want money for their trouble? They could easily have suspended him, transfer listed him and then recouped some money.

The hypocrisy about drugs in sport/footbal is amazing

Mutu has never denied taking coke but he has said it didn't start until he moved to London. Chelsea should have done all they could to help him out and I think they had a duty of care to do so. How a corrupt gangster like Abramovich can push for this kind of penalty is the most obscene thing in the whole case.

they suspected he was using cocaine, tested him "at random". got him a ban and sacked him. they shouldn't receive any compensation. he was suspended, by their doing. he lost his value, by their doing. what he does in his spare time is his business, but if the club aren't happy about it there are plenty of ways they could've dealt with this internally.

would you advocate the same thing happening to any of our players who take cocaine?

They cant force him to pay it though can they? They can ban him from football maybe, but hes banned anyway and would be better off retiring than paying those c**** that sort of money fom his own pocket.

Definitely. And I'd make it plain, up front, that the club has zero tolerance for it and that the club will go after them for compensation if they f*ck up. I'd be all for getting them into rehab and getting them help as well. But if they want to live a secret life of p*ssing their career up the wall, then I have no sympathy for them.

What he does in his spare time IS the club's business because the club need peak physical condition in return -- it is a 24 hour a day commitment.

I'll tell you this, Shanks wouldn't have stood for it. He was very clear about what he expected the relationship between club and player should be.

and there you have it. that's how you protect your investment, not hauling them out of training on the first day and trying to ruin their career.

anyway, shanks liked a bit of the beak himself, wouldn't have bothered him.
