Dedicated Media Centre

I'm thinking of buying a dedicated media centre. I'm using a Sony PC/media centre at the moment and its a pile of utter crap. Ignoring how long it takes to boot up it just cannot handle 1080p video. Apple TV is one option. Hacking it means I can add significant storage, play a range of different video formats and turn it into a internet browsing platform but I have enough of those already and, again, I'm not certain about the how it handles HD quality video. Has anyone used one and/or can anyone suggest an alternative? Similarly, is there a better media management/player than XBMC available?
