They should have a section of 'what happened next' devoted to this bell

Howard Webb, whose controversial refereeing display in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final between Aston Villa and Chelsea drew stinging criticism from Martin O'Neill, has received an unexpected vote of confidence from his employers after he was spared the ignominy of being demoted to the Football League this weekend.

Webb, the Premier League's most high-profile official and England's representative at this summer's World Cup finals, will take charge of Sunderland's home game against Burnley despite recent criticism. The Fifa official attracted complaints at the weekend before last, when he failed to dismiss Sylvain Distin after the Everton defender denied West Ham's Carlton Cole a clear goalscoring opportunity, and on Saturday he incensed O'Neill with two highly contentious decisions.

The Villa manager claimed Webb should have awarded a penalty-kick after Mikel John Obi brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor and said John Terry's challenge on James Milner in the second half merited a red card. O'Neill accused Webb of "bottling it".

Webb, who has made no contact with O'Neill since, is understood to have acknowledged privately that he made a mistake with the penalty-kick. It had been expected he would be punished in the same fashion as Mike Dean, who was demoted to Championship duty last weekend after several errors in the Manchester United-Chelsea fixture at Old Trafford 10 days ago.

Instead, Mike Riley, head of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, has given Webb another top-flight game, which will raise eyebrows among managers and officials. Riley's approach differs from that of his predecessor, Keith Hackett, who felt officials should be held accountable for their decisions and, as a result, punished poor performances by taking referees off duty for a week.

I met Hackett once at a refs conference, he was chairing it, came across as a really top bloke.

f***ing Howard Webb, not a week goes by without a new episode of incompetence

We haven't had Clattenburg this season.

I don't think we've had him since the bitters game either.

That's strange.

We've had Clattenburg just once since that game - a few months later against Villa at home. He was banned all of last year, but you're right in saying we haven't had him this season.

He hasn't reffed Everton since either.

I think I hate Webb most of all. He's done us more disservice than (probably) all of the other c**** put together

I think he's been incompetent since putting Man Utd back into the game against Spurs last season, but he's got a long long way to go before he can eclipse the bias shown towards the Mancs on a consistent basis by Riley.

Webb is a formerly half decent (but not great) ref, turned awful by his own love of the spotlight and desire to please. Seems to have a soft spot for the Mancs (terrible, terrible penalty decisions at OT against Spurs last season, and us this season). I don't think Ferguson has ever said a bad word against him, and Webb rewards United with dodgy decisions. I few more years of it, and he'll be right up there with Riley. Webb also gave a terrible penalty decision to co-hosts Austria at the Euro's in 08, and was (rightly) vilified in Poland.

Not being demoted by the FA for his mess up in the semi, is typical FA bottling and is yet another embarrassment.

I hope he embarrasses himself out there

if Webb performs as he has done this season you can bet that he wont last beyond the group stages. The mans a f***ing embecile and couldnt referee a game of table football.

sorry did I say 'if' ? I meant 'when'. he doesnt have the bottle to be independent and unbiased and looks terrified of upsetting people who might give him a b******ing such as the PSM. Rafa will say 'I dont want to talk about the referee' or something unscathing and Webb probably reckons he can live with that, whereas the pissstainedmeff will come out and outright b****** him.

That's part of why I hate him so much. He appeared to have potential, but then it went to his head & now - as the Guardian guy said - he seems to revel in 'making tough decisions', usually the wrong ones. His posturing is also all about 'look at me'.

He's a c***. Rennie used to get hammered, but was infinitely better & more humble than this c***.

We really need to open the doors to refs, i.e. an Italian ref or whatever can ref in England or wherever - a la EU. Perhaps being away from the constant press spotlight would help. Some refs go into a game half-having awarded a controversial pen, goal or whatever due to manager/press pressure

Bennett. Remember him sending Alonso off against Arsenal when he slipped over.

the c*** wasn't even looking at that, turned around saw 2 players on the floor and sent off Alonso
