Hotel Advice - Singapore

My eldest daughter is off to the land of Oz on 3 May for 9 weeks. She is travelling with her boyfriend - NO SMUT - she will be reading the replies They stop off in Singapore for two nights and they are looking for a hotel (or alternative) - they have spied the Fragrance Hotel / Sapphire in Geylang which is cheap (room is £50 for the 2 nights) and which gets decent enough reviews on Trip Advisor.

 

Anyone know hotel or the area - safe enough?

 

They then head off to Oz, firstly to Melbourne, then Sydney, Cairns, Brisbane and then stop off in Hong Kong for 3 nights on way back. If you have any ideas for places to stay (hostels etc) please let me know. Any little known sights to see or places to visit. Internal flights have been booked. Her boyfriend (who is a Manc .... but not the wholly obnoxious type ) is a very keen surfer and intends to buy a board out there - suggestions welcome.

 

My daughter is sitting beside me watching me type this, hence the lack of usual bad language.
