David Hodgson Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 At the risk of doing the obvious, it's gotta be said that we have the better run by far than most of our rivals for 4th. If you count 'tough games still to play' as any against Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Villa, Spurs, Man City and Everton, then : City have 5 'tough' ones of their remaining 11. Spurs have 4 from 10 Villa have 3 from 11 ...and we have 2 from 10. If we hold our nerve now and take the points we should take (i.e. win the home bankers and notch up a couple of aways then we have a real chance of taking 4th).
stressederic Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 We're also (potentially) benefiting from the fact that the Chelsea game is right at the end of the season. These matters could be tied up by then which removes that match from the reckoning. Of course if everything left to play for then that match is going to be pretty important. I'm also not overly keen on the idea of having to form a guard of honour at Anfield for that bunch of c**** if they've wrapped up the leage the week before.

stressederic Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 or it could be that we need to beat Chelsea to finish top 4handing united the league in the process Lets not go down that road of thought though, aye? That's a very good point about the timing of the Chelsea game. I noticed it first of all at the start of the season, but back then I was seeing it as a potential boost to a title challenge. Nevermind though.
yellow jumper Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 the game against blackburn at anfield in 94 was a right laugh.

I noticed it first of all at the start of the season, but back then I was seeing it as a potential boost to a title challenge. Nevermind though. I thought last season that United would benefit from having their Arsenal at home fixture closer to the end than us. So it proved. The Chelsea game right at the death gives us a good chance of being top of our pile after the next 8 games. Then we're either home and dry or know what we have to do, but from a strong position.

Exactly. Plus us getting players like Torres, Benayoun etc back from injury now means that (hopefully) we can put ourselves into a position where we know what the Chelsea match will mean to us. It's a decent quirk of the fixture computer and I agree with you (on the Arsenal bit) I think it might help us out.
Gunga Din Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 we need to be looking at taking a minimum of 22 points from these 10 games

David Hodgson Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 we need to be looking at taking a minimum of 22 points from these 10 games Great minds Wayne. I calculate City will get 21 points, so 22 for us and we'll win it on goal difference.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 we need to be looking at taking a minimum of 22 points from these 10 gamesbeing a sad case... we're currently on 48 from 28 games. In the past 10 seasons, the team finishing 4th has had: 7276686761 - Blueshyte6067716867 - Us in 2000 so that's an average of 67.7 - call it 68, but if you remove the two obvious anomalies - 2004 & 2005 - us with 60 & BBB's with 61 - then the average is 69.5. So let's assume 70 is the minimum. Although this season I can ironically see the Champions with a relatively low points total & 4th relatively high. I reckon we need to aim for 72 - so another 24 points....we can only drop 6 more...
Flasher Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 We can still finish on 78 points - i think we might need to as well. Actually, the fact that we still "could" finish only 8 points down on last season and with a UEFA Cup win is pretty strange considering the season we've had to date

Id be over the sodding moon as it would mean they'd stopped the Mancs doing the unthinkable.
CarraLegend Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Its a bit annoying that Everton is one of Villa's harder looking games because I will be absolutely amazed if they do anything other than lose deliberately. They cant really finish above 8th so arent going to be arsed. I still think they're our biggest threat and relying on them to bottle it again is dangerous.

stressederic Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Id be over the sodding moon as it would mean they'd stopped the Mancs doing the unthinkable. I want them to stop United but the idea ofseeing us clap them onto Anfield offends me. I want them to win the league so I can ignore them, not so they can be led onto the pitch like a bunch of conquering heroes.
Sion Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 (edited) Anything less than 13 points from the 5 games between the united and Chelsea games and we're finishing 5th or 6th i'm afraid. Can't see us getting more than 4 points max from united/chelsea/birmingham games Edited March 1, 2010 by Sion
MFletcher Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 (edited) Spurs will lose three games in three around May when they face Arsenal, United and Chelsea in consecutive weeks. Martin O'Neill has never won a game in the month of March with Aston Villa. Straight fight between ourselves and City, who have a much tougher run-in than we do. Edited March 1, 2010 by MFletcher
CarraLegend Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Spurs will lose three games in three around May when they face Arsenal, United and Chelsea in consecutive weeks. I doubt they'll lose all 3, they could quite possibly beat both Chelsea and Arsenal at home who are ordinary away from home. Martin O'Neill has never won a game in the month of March with Aston Villa. Doesnt really mean a lot. Straigtht fight between ourselves and City, who have a much tougher run-in than we do. It does look tougher, though they were meant to lose at Chelsea.

CarraLegend Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 in which case i´d rather we lose Please tell me that is a joke?
surf Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Please tell me that is a joke? nope. 18 titles each, i dont want the mancs to be ´the most succesful team in the history of the english game´. which they will be if they get nr. 19. and i really dont care about the difference in finances between europa league and CL. the income we get is only going to be spent on debt repayments, which is money in the yanks pockets. yes, i´d rather play in the CL than the EL, but i´d rather play in the EL than hand the mancs a title. they can f*** right off.
