New York Red Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I am decidedly underwhelmed. He has done b*gger all. We got him on the cheap I know, but I just don;t see what he does for us at all. Benny p*sses all over him any day.
Falconhoof Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I don't think its fair to single anyone out after that game. Nobody stood out.
Bootle Buck Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I'm not sure what his actual qualities are. He looks slow, uncreative and certainly not much of a goalscorer. Although I could say the same about several of our players.
The Invisible Man Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 It's a bit soon to criticise him but it reminds me of when Morientes came, i.e. a couple of years too late and can't deal with the pace of the Premiership. Still no one in our team is playing particularly well so hopefully he'll come good
Zoob Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I'm not gonna complain too much, as we got him on a free, and it's not his fault we persist with a formation that - in terms of attacking - only really works as intended when Torres is playing. He does seem slow, but he's got a decent touch, seems tactically aware and isn't afraid to put his foot in. Seems a typical Rafa player in that respect, even though I'm sure Rafa would prefer to have several million to spend on a faster, more skillful wide player.

Maxi is the kind of player that utilizes off the ball movement to make an impact, but that is only an option if the rest of the team actually moves. I think Maxi will be a good squad player for us, but he shouldn't be a starter - not the right fit.
Earl Hafler Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Honestly, we can't afford to sign any more slow players or any more midfielders that can't carry a ball. I think Maxi will be a good squad player for us, but he shouldn't be a starter - not the right fit. I agree with that. The 4-2-3-1 we play relies on Gerrard, Benayoun, Kuyt and Torres to all be in the side and on form.
dl2009 Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 He's always been a better player on the right then on the left. He works incredibly hard and has a terrific shot. His movement is also top class. He hasn't fully settled in yet (difficult enough as a new signing, but a January signing usually takes a bit more time). As pointed out above, he thrives in teams with good movement, so he's obviously going to struggle to make an impact at the minute.
Walrus Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Haven't seen anything in him so far, but today I think he was ever so slightly better in his passing at least.
lfc003 Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Haven't seen anything in him so far, but today I think he was ever so slightly better in his passing at least. I think we are seeing the reason why Atletico didn't offer him a new contract and allowed him to leave on a free. He doesn't deserve his place in the side at the minute but i think he will improve next season with a full pre season behind him.
New York Red Posted February 21, 2010 Author Posted February 21, 2010 I don't think its fair to single anyone out after that game. Nobody stood out. Not just this game mate. It has been every game. He's just not special at all.
MFletcher Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Maxi was a top class player in La Liga. Excellent movement, a knack for scoring goals, very accomplished with the ball at his feet. He is being asked to do a job for the side at the minute, and he has not shirked the physical, hard working aspect of that in the slightest. But hey, we need a scapegoat for today's game and he'll have to do.
magneto Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Played f***all all season for Athletico, joined a club extremely low on confidence and in DESPERATE need of results to get into the Champions League playing in a domestic league that's 10x faster than what he's used to?

He's been a non-entity. Not bad, but not good either. He certainly wasn't the reason for us not winning today.

He's been a non-entity. Not bad, but not good either. He certainly wasn't the reason for us not winning today. Non-entity? He's worked bloody hard on the pitch for the benefit of the team. He's put himself about and sacrificed his natural willingness to go forward. It's commendable that he's willing to do that instead of doing a headless chicken to try and prove himself. Would you be happier if he'd scored four goals in four games but we then conceded six goals in four games because his wing was left exposed by his constant forays into the box? He's put the team first. Applaud it, instead of looking for something else to have a moan about. Edited February 21, 2010 by MFletcher
Conrad Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 He was a poor signing. And I wish people would stop going on about 'free' he would have received a signing on fee, plus his wages over the duration of his contract = several million pounds
5InIstanbul Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Not just this game mate. It has been every game. He's just not special at all. 'kinell fella, give him a chance. As a comparison, and bear with me as this is a bit leftfield, probably never been considered on a forum before. Now, cast your mind back to when Pires joined Arsenal. If I remember correctly..

I might just give up arguing the point on here.
Conrad Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 He has played about five games for the club. I might just give up arguing the point on here. He was a poor signing. He is not a poor player. He is not the player we needed. We do not need a slow, 29 year old past his peak wide midfielder getting used to a new league. OK? Please do give up arguing the point Fletch because debating with you is completely futile. You do not understand football as has been 'conclusively proven' by the inane drivel you have been filling this forum with over the past couple of days.
MFletcher Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Can you find me a world class, pacey winger we could have signed for free in January? I'm sure Rafa would love to have Ribery down the left wing, but it's not going to happen. He's a very solid, dependable, intelligent player who is putting the side first instead of his own personal glory. I really struggle to understand how he can be a poor signing on the basis of five or so games where he has grafted his socks off and played a good part in grinding out the wins we need.
Frosty Jack Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 He was a poor signing. who should we have signed in january?
Flight Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Honestly, we can't afford to sign any more slow players or any more midfielders that can't carry a ball. Problrm is, financially, we can't afford to sign anyone, period.
growler Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Firstly, he should be given more time to prove himself. He's not exactly played much this season yet. We haven't exactly had a game where we have played well either. I would think he would do better in a team containing Aqui, Gerrard, Torres, Beni and Pacheco, the only players from our front 6 who can 'pass and move'. Second point, to those who were saying 'who else could we have got?' No one. If a player is not good enough, doesn't mean we sign him because there is nothing better available. He was signed because the management believe he is a good enough player for Liverpool, not because there is no one else available and we had to get someone in.
Gomez Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I am decidedly underwhelmed. He has done b*gger all. We got him on the cheap I know, but I just don;t see what he does for us at all. Benny p*sses all over him any day. Like everything else in life, you get what you pay for,
Ombudsam Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I think even a top form Maxi isn't the type of player we need the most to be fair.
