Racing legend Dick Francis - the man who rode Devon Loch - has died at the age of 89.

Francis rode in 2,305 races between 1948 and 1957 and won 345 of them - many for the late Queen Mother.

On the racecourse, he will be best remembered for a race he lost - the 1956 Grand National.

Francis and Devon Loch were clear of eventual winner ESB when the Royal horse collapsed just 50 yards from the finishing line.

Francis retired from riding owing to injury the following year. He became a journalist and best selling author - his first novel 'Dead Cert' was published in 1962, his last 'Even Money' in 2009, but his first book was his autobiography 'The Sport Of Queens'.
