Has anyone used a sequencer before? How difficult are they to learn?

Any tips on what to buy as a beginners jobbie? Or am I better off sticking to cubase?

 

I'm buying a nice little digital recorder, a boss micro br and although that does have a beat machine built in, I quite fancied playing around with some synth sounds to go along with the recording just for demo purposes.

 

Any advice you have would be much appreciated (ahem fyds...)
