Can anyone answer this for me, it's driving me mad:

A man stole into the king's garden and picked oranges. On his way out he was caught by the King's guard who said to him "If you wish to leave here safely, give me half of the oranges that you picked and half an orange without cutting it." The thief gave the guard what he requested and went on his way.

A second guard caught him and said to him "If you wish to leave here safely, give me half of the oranges that you picked and half an orange without cutting it." The thief gave the guard what he requested and went on his way.

Just as he was about to leave the garden he was caught by a third guard who said to him "If you wish to leave here safely, give me half of the oranges that you picked and half an orange without cutting it." The thief gave the guard what he requested and left the king's garden unharmed but without any oranges.

How many oranges did the thief pick in the king's garden?

Cannot understand how they got the answer...

seven. Obviously too stupid to work it out even with the answer .
