Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas is in serious condition after he was shot in the head during an attack at a Mexico City bar, it was confirmed by Mexico City's attorney general.

The 29-year-old Cabanas suffered the attack early Monday morning, although it is still unclear what provoked the incident.

"He was shot in the head," prosecutor Miguel Angel Mancera told the news channel Televisa. "According to an initial report it [the bullet] was a shot from a firearm with a frontal entry point and without exit."

"We don't clearly know the motive behind the injury ... The player is conscious but he has a heart problem which they're trying to stabilize.

"We're waiting to see what those arrested have to say. It seems that the attack happened in the bathroom of the bar."

Cabanas scored 18 goals in 24 matches this past season for Mexican side Club America, and he has established himself as one of the top strikers in the Mexican league since his arrival in 2003, tallying 125 goals in 218 games.

He is expected to play a big role for Paraguay's national team at this summer's World Cup in South Africa, where his side will play in Group F with Italy, Slovakia and New Zealand.

The Sunderland forum i was reading over the Jones thing will be distraught, every other post is 'when/if we sign Cabanas'

I fancy Benni Mccarthy E/W. South Africa are bound to get their share of dodgy decisions and they've got an decent group.

If a player scores 3 goals they'll probably finish in the E/W places, don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility.

Doubt South africa will score 3 goals in the whole tournament (unless they get some serious south Korean "luck")

I suppose there is always a chance with 3 goals, but I can see Villa, Torres scoring a few in their group, and Fabiano will fancy his chances against north korea and Ivory coast

what are the odds on Owen being top goal scorer?
