Fans Ask Fergie To Resign

The former chairman of a Manchester United supporter's group has urged Sir Alex Ferguson to resign in protest at the Glazer family's ownership of the club.

A meeting was arranged by the Manchester United Supporter's Trust (MUST) before Saturday's game against Burnley, at which Johnny Flacks, a founding member and former chairman of the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association, spoke.

The Guardian reports that a protest march is planned for before the Champions League tie against AC Milan in March, and Flacks proposed that the group write to Ferguson asking him to quit in solidarity.

"This is not intended as an Alex Ferguson rant," Flacks is quoted by the paper as saying.

"But he claims to be a socialist, a former shop steward and a man of the people, so he must be horrified by what is going on. It would work only if thousands of people sent a copy of this letter to Ferguson letting him know that our fear, if the Glazers stay in control, is that his legacy is going to be destroyed. We wouldn't want that and I don't think he would either."

Asking the most successful manager in the club's history to resign over a matter of principle will seem ludicrous to many, a fact that Flacks acknowledged.

"That is the ridiculous scenario," Flacks said. "We are talking about a manager who has achieved so much for the club and has created the monster that is Manchester United. But we have to look at the greater good and at the moment we have the ludicrous situation where a club that gets over 70,000 supporters is losing money.

"This would be Ferguson's chance of saying that something had to be done. He would be looking after the club in the longer term if it meant the Glazers would sell more quickly. And if he said he was going to resign, maybe that would also encourage potential buyers to hurry up."

There was sustained anti-Glazer chanting at the Burnley game, with a large banner that read 'Love United, hate Glazer' unfurled at the Stretford End, a banner that was confiscated rapidly.

As has been said before, the Mancs really are in the s***, even moreso than us. They are in a bad state now already losing money, but in a couple of years time they are in big trouble when all the favorable rates and time delayed repayments come up for settling.

The Glazers are already talking about selling assets and things like the training ground.

Interesting that they also had their anti owner banners confiscated.

The governing bodies are absolutely pathetic allowing owners like ours and theirs leverage the clubs so much.

No way will Ferguson get involved or even comment or acknowledge there are any issues, he's got a year or two left and has his own agenda and legacy to serve. One more title and I'll reckon he'll leave it to someone else to try and keep Rooney and properly replace Scholes, Giggs, Neville and maybe even Ferdinand

There fans have been pretty quiet for a while up to now. I guess if you are winning stuff long term problems are not as apparant

I said a couple of weeks ago on here that, whilst Ferguson is being praised for keeping off field problems away from the squad, he could be doing more harm than good long term. But then he doesn't care about long term. He won't be there

He might also take the view that short of finding someone with £1Bn to clear the debt and pay the Glazers a profit, there's little he or anyone else can do to resolve it. I'd make us slightly different in that there is still room for us to grow and outgrow the debt burden, it's not sugar daddy or bust

He's always been all smiles and complaints about the owners, despite the fans hatred of them, you almost expect there has been a soul selling deal between them and nothing was going to get in the way of his legacy aims

It is here I declare an interest.... My wife's firm are involved in the refinancing of their debt

I assume that I am therefore at liberty to bury under the patio (once she's been paid, of course)

With the problems United face, Sir Baconface has done an incredibly good job at United in recent years.

yes, because he had to rely on free transfers like Berbatov, Nani, Vidic, Carrick, Heargreavs, Anderson, the serbian kid..etc

FWIW, I like the Glaziers, hope they continue their good work

made me laugh yesterdat that there was a story that they asked Guardiola to join their coaching staff in the hope that he takes over from their manager in 2 years

Not sure. They have still invested heavily up to this summer. If he wins the league this year it will be a great achievement i think. But then i don't think they will

united fans should ritually slaughter mr. ferguson and burn his body along with old trafford in a protest against the owners

How can someone pay over £1bn for the mancs and hope to get a return?

They already have the stadium and exploit commercial opportunities to the maximum.

That's the rub, there are very few human beings on the planet who could even afford to flog away a billion quid for some reflected glory cos there aint no cash to be made there.

He's had one transfer window where he hasn't been able to spend big; summer just gone. And they look sh*t.

thing is - it doesn't make me happy. Partly because of our position, but I want to be able to beat them properly, not because they're hamstrung.

Maybe I'm being silly.

Anyway - f*** them, they're being raped by the Glazers... below from the link above

The Glazer family, who own Manchester United, can take almost £130m cash out of the club next year alone if enough lenders sign up for the bond they have launched to borrow £500m for United.

Nestling in the small print of the 322-page bond prospectus are provisions allowing the Glazers to take £70m out of the club's cash reserves, which includes the money they have received from selling players such as Cristiano Ronaldo. The document also reserves for the Glazers the legal right to pay £25m out of the club in a dividend, and half of what is termed "consolidated net income". This is effectively the club's cash profits, which based on the most recent accounts would have meant £23m being paid out last year.

The bond's terms also note that the Glazers will have the right for £6m a year to be paid to companies they own "for administration and management services", and a further £3m "in respect of services provided by directors, officers or employees" of companies the Glazers use to hold their shares in United.

That money, added to the £70m and £25m one-off payments, plus the half of United's cash profit they can take out each year (equating to £23m last year), add up to £127m next year alone.

That huge figure is in addition to the straightforward payment of interest (yield) on the £500m the club will have borrowed via the bond, which at a mooted 9%, will be £45m. That will bring the total taken out of United to service the Glazers' borrowings, which were loaded on to the club after the family bought the club in 2005, to £172m next year alone.

That's exactly how I feel Macca, seeing the mancs getting royally f*cked doesn't make our plight any better and in fact puts us in bed with the barstards.
