Truly bizarre article! "Lowest point in my lifetime as a Liverpool fan?" What a hysterical gobsh*te!

Liverpool's under-fire board were last night urged to sack Rafa Benitez.

The call came from the normally supportive Reds legend John Aldridge, who has blasted Benitez's tactics and transfer policy.

The former striker said: "'This is the lowest point in my lifetime as a Liverpool fan.

"Rafa's departure would be an upheaval but he would've lost his job by now if he was at another top club. The question is - do Liverpool have the money to pay off the remainder of his contract?"

Benitez has four years remaining on his current deal, signed only last February. Liverpool sit eighth in the Premier League, 12 points off leaders Chelsea and four points off a Champions League place.

Aldridge, speaking to Nuts magazine, added: "'Liverpool must finish in the top four, whatever it takes.

"Anything else would be a disaster for the club already weighed down in debt. Sadly, I can't see any way they'll claim that final Champions League spot - unless they get back on track soon'

"Benltez can't claim injuries are the problem, as both [Fernando] Torres and [steven] Gerrard are now fit and playing.

"However, he's still employing baffling tactics - such as sending out a defensive team against the Premier League's bottom club and getting beaten."

Aldridge played 104 times for his boyhood favourites scoring 63 goals. He also lifted the title with Liverpool in 1988, in between two second-placed finishes.

These days the once mighty outfit are a very different club.

Indeed Liverpool were beaten 2-0 by another crisis club, Portsmouth, on December 19.

Aldridge now believes Benitez must find a way to bring in a new striker to provide support for Torres on whom the club have been heavily reliant.

Benitez has already freed up striker Dirk Kuyt to move into a more central position from the right by snapping up Atletico Madrid winger Maxi Rodriguez.

Aldridge believes even more reinforcements are needed. He went on: "Torres and Gerrard need support! Apparently, Real Madrid's Ruud van Nistelrooy fancies coming to Liverpool and I reckon he'd be an excellent short-term option.

" I'd also try to bring in the Celtic's Aiden McGeady and even Bolton's Kevin Davies.

"Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy and Michael Owen could all be wearing Liverpool colours today, yet Rafa relies on an untested kid in David Ngog to start in big games? Now he's reaping the rewards of letting his best players leave."

Well we may not agree with him but there can be no doubts as to where his loyalties lie and he's a former professional who played in a successful Liverpool team so presumably knows what one looks like so he's as entitled to his opinion as anyone else.

"He's entitled to his opinion" is such an empty phrase. Of course people are entitled to an opinion, just as I'm of the opinion that his opinion is hysterical and not based on reality.

'He's entitled to his opinion is such an empty phrase' is the sort of phrase bandied about by those who, in reality, will only tolerate someone else's opinion if it tallies with their own. Aren't your opinions strong and robust enough to withstand an alternative viewpoint?

Do you think an interview in nuts magazine where he calls for the manager's head and comes up with rubbish as "my lowest moments as a liverpool fan"(coming after two wins in the league) would help the club in any way?

Amazingly insightful stuff.

I'll only tolerate someone's opinion if it can be backed up with facts and logic. If someone spouts provocative nonsense like this then they deserve to be corrected.

As I wrote, we may not agree with him but to call a passionate supporter and former idol an 'hysterical g*******' does your cause no good at all. Do you think there should be some sort of official stance outlining our unity and commitment to the present set-up and any deviation from that should result in people being ostracised as that seems to be where you're going with this.

Nor does his undoubted passion and idol status mean he should be immune from criticism, nor the expression of his opinion - to which no-one has claimed he is not entitled - be allowed to avoid a critique of it's content, context, rationality or value, nor that that critique - given he is calling for another LFC 'idol', one who has arguably achieved as much for the club as Aldo himself,to get the sack - should not be phrased in the traditional , lively manner of these discussions in this forum.

And sadly, he is talking b******s, imo, and deserves to be told so on here.

Rafa is an idol to some.

he had a right go at Yossi last season and Yossi went on to have the best season of his career, lets hope he has a similar effect on Rafa this season

So Aldo thinks we should buy some more players? Why didn't Rafa think of that?

f***ing weapon

Thank GOD, Aldo is not our manager. Kevin f***in davies!!

Maybe he s jealous cos rafa is to add rush to our coaching staff and not him??!!

He was on tv the other day saying Jermain Beckford at £6m-£7m would be a bargain, thats the 26 year old league one players who's contract ends in 6 months. He's harmless generally but he is absolutely clueless.

Should we only listen to Liverpool Legends when they say something we agree with?

I'm expecting Anny Road to say he got leathered with John Barnes soon, and that we should all listen to him.
