Essiens a defensive midfielder in the way Stevie is one. Neither is a pure DM, is he?

 

I like Mascherano, Xavi and Xabi.

 

 

One to watch? Javi Martinez and Moussa Sissoko. Sergio Busquets for Barca's a good player too, but im not sure if he'll be played in the DM role that he started out in.

Masch is too limited I reckon - the three above have more to their game than just defending - and unlike Makele or Hamann (two more 'limited' players if you will), not quite as good (yet).

a defensive midfielder is by definition limited though. that's why essien is not one. the three best alive at the minute are mascherano, makelele and didi hamann.
