When do we think his best period was? When you look at how he used to play for Barcelona, it was extraordinary. Not only was he better than everyone else on the pitch he wanted the ball more than them as well. His skill and desire used to blow players away.

The thing with Ronaldo's trickery (as opposed to the Portuguese version) was that it always had a clear purpose when it was used - not just attempts at showing off. His feet and his brain were both so f***ing quick.

Barca days and the year he absolutely tore Man Utd apart with Real Madrid. Phenomenal.

The stats in the video are actually wrong - check his Wikipedia. 47 goals in 49 games in the year he was at Barcelona.

Vickery speaks of his last game for Brazil in Brazil vs Argentina in 2004 - anyone have a video of that?

Guy had it all - he was like Torres on speed...and then some.

The interesting thing to note was that even as a 'chubby' guy, he didn't lose all his speed. Look at some of the Real Madrid goals in there - he was less than his fully fit lean Barca days, but he still burst past players. Even now in Brazil as a tub of lard he just blows players away with speed.

He was still damn quick when he was fat, yeah, but he became incredibly lazy whenever the ball was nowhere near him - presumably to save what little energy he had. Give him the ball then and he could still burst away from people, but he may as well have been a mannequin the rest of the time - it's why the Madrid fans lost patience with him, despite his incredible goal record there.

he just wanted to score goals so was incredibly direct. no f***ing about for the cameras or mugging when taking freekicks like the portuguese fanny merchant, just explosive speed, bull-like strength and a massive desire to score goals. plus his balance was something else too and i don't really remember him much taking a dive when challenged, he'd just keep going. wonderful sight in full flight he was.

pretty much summed up by that goal he scored for Barcelona, when a player tries to pull himback by his shirt near the half way line, but just accelerates away, and beats about four other players to score. Probably in the best 5 out and out strikers that have ever played, along with Pele, Muller, Berbatov and Eusebio.

he was a great player, probably the third best player of all time, but to say he wasn't a diver is just crazy, not that there is anything wrong with diving

i said that i don't remember him diving. i didn't watch his every minute but i remember him always trying to stay on his feet when other players, particularly modern era ones, would have taken the freekicks. and with ronaldo it often resulted in him scoring a goal. which is to his credit.

Did he actually take free kicks for anybody on a regular basis?

One of my favourite ever players and when I got the chance to get one of his signed shirts, it wasn't a hard choice. Would have rather have had a Barca one than a Madrid one but can't really complain.

Best striker of his generation by a mile.

I dont think he was an out and out striker (or poacher) like Muller. That would be another fantastic striker - Romario. Ronaldo had it all though. What a player and a priviledge to watch him play

remember a fantastic goal he scored for PSV in the champs league (overhead kick it was). I remember thinking then that he was something special - barca then snapped him up at the end of that season.

Yep - more a 'forward' than a striker. Still think he's very much like Torres, except in his heyday he was better. Much better.
